Singer turned actress Bae Seul Gi recently made a fresh start with MBC’s ‘The Greatest Love‘. Although she had a minor role as her character didn’t have many scenes, she was one of the pivotal figures in finding out the reason behind the disbandment of the drama’s fictional girl group.
Bae Seul Gi was a popular singer (The Red) and variety star a couple years ago and was known for her comedic yet stylish retro dances. Unfortunately, fans couldn’t see much of her in the spotlight as she went on an involuntary hiatus and focused on musicals. ‘The Greatest Love’ marked her first return to the small screen.
In her interview with Sports Chosun, she revealed, “My first acting attempt wasn’t hard, but I was under a lot of pressure. I knew that if I messed up the few lines I had, it could be a fatal scratch to the drama overall.”
When asked about her hiatus, she replied, “There wasn’t any discord, but there were some things that were tiring while promoting as a singer. When things got bad, I thought of running away from the industry, which happened to fit with my role as ‘Han Mina’.”
She continued, “I didn’t think I’d have to conclude my promotions so early. I was so apologetic to my fans that I couldn’t even write a message for them on our fancafe. All I said was, ‘I’ll return with a better image soon.’ I said that several times, but in the end, all I could do was apologize. Later, I didn’t feel that I had the right to even utter an apology…”
Bae Seul Gi paused to wipe the tears in her eyes before adding, “I never cry in front of my fans. They call me ‘boss’, and sometimes they’ll throw surprise events to try and move me to tears. During my musical, I didn’t cry in front of my fans and cried on my own where they couldn’t see me. I’ve been with them for six years, and they’re all people that I must be thankful for for the rest of my life.”
When asked about her future plans, she replied, “I haven’t decided on just pursuing acting alone. You only live once so I want to try a variety of other things. As for now, I want to focus on acting. As I’m still lacking, I want to work really hard at it. I consider that the only way I can pay back my fans.”
21 June:
Singer-turned-actress, Bae Seul Gi, recently shared her views on retreating from the public eye.
Bae Seul Gi is currently playing character ‘Han Mina’ in the drama ‘The Greatest Love‘; ‘Han Mina’ is a girl who decided to return to a more regular lifestyle after being a member in a popular band.
Bae Seul Gi said, “Although my situation isn’t exactly the same as Han Mina’s, I have thought about retreating from the public eye… When the celebrity lifestyle was tiring me out, I thought about immigrating to America – where my uncle lives- alone with my mother. One of the lines that Gong Hyo Jin’s character said was similar to my situation.”
Back in 2005, Bae Seul Gi debuted under a trio called ‘The Red‘ and quickly gained fame for her retro (‘bokko‘) dance. Since then, she released a solo album, attended various events, and even became a frequent guest on three different variety shows. Two years after her debut, Bae Seul Gi faced an overwhelming schedule that resulted from her high popularity.
The singer eventually turned to acting, which added to her stress level. She said, “For someone who majored in acting, I quickly released a record. As my popularity grew, I began to lose my mind. There were times when I had to meet activities on only 2~3 hours of sleep a day… I wouldn’t get paid without putting in such hard effort, and that bothered me a lot. I was suffering. I naturally wanted to leave my company, but instead took an interregnum with them. I was going through a slump.”
After reflecting on the similarities of her past with that of her character’s, Bae Seul Gi began to tear up. She said, “We are currently filming a flashback scene for Han Mina, which I am tense about. Because of my anxiety, my face was having spasms. During that time, Lee Hee Jin, Gong Hyo Jin, Yoo In Na, and the other members took care of me. They made me laugh to relieve my tension and we wrapped up the filming without any incident. I like Mina’s tranquil role because it feels like I’m starting anew.”
Bae Seul Gi later added, “I’m very happy that I can show off this tranquil image of myself. Through this role, I can shed my image as a ‘bokko dancer’ and transition into an image of an actress. Even though the role is small, it has given me ‘the greatest opportunity.’ I’m very thankful to the creator. Now, I am ready to start anew.”
