17 December:
With every girl group having done some variation of the ‘sexy concept’ by now, the concept itself has become rather standardized, if not blasé.
After School, however, is different. They don’t have to show excessive skin to pull off sexy looks; rather, their sexiness seems to be inherent, as it radiates naturally from each member. Stunning figures, powerful performance styles, and a healthy, sexy look are some of the qualities that helped After School stand out.
The girls sat down with Sports Seoul to discuss their thoughts on their sexy image.
Leader Kahi commented, “I think people took well to our sexy concepts because in our choreography, we don’t put emphasis on showing skin; instead, we’d focus on the powerful dance routines. We also have our cute sides as well. Our sexy image was created with the stage in mind, so we didn’t feel uncomfortable or reluctant about it.”
Raina added with a shy smile, “We like that our team has a distinctive color. I actually want our sexy image to stand out more. I want to start showing off the potential I’ve kept hidden inside.”
When asked how their image was created, Lizzy explained, “I practiced making facial expressions in a room with a big mirror for five hours a day. After about one or two hours of it, I start getting sleepy and start disliking my face.”
The topic then drifted onto Bekah, the member who graduated from the group in June. The girls agreed that it was the saddest moment of their year, and Jungah stated, “The concept of admissions and graduations was something originally planned with the idea of it being a happy event. We had no idea that it would be so sad, and the decision came suddenly, which made it even worse.”
Kahi added, “Bekah’s been studying art for a long time so she’s exceptional in that regard. It seems that transitioning from a free lifestyle in Hawaii to a cloistered one in the entertainment industry didn’t fit her well. Although she’s talented musically, she probably desired to study freely, and thus decided to graduate.”
When asked how it felt to be three years into their careers now, Kahi concluded, “Has it only been three years? It feels like it’s been at least six. Since our training, so many things have happened, like member changes and unit and solo activities. We’re capable of so many things that one international media outlet called us the most efficient group in Asia. We promise to become an After School that always works hard.”
