23 October:
Right before their first comeback stage on KBS‘s ‘Music Bank‘, the ladies of SNSD sat down with reporters in their waiting room to express their gratitude for their music chart ‘all-kill’ with “The Boys“.
The girls began, “We’re both excited and nervous every time we release a new album. There was some anticipation because it was our first Korean comeback in a while. Since ‘The Boys’ is different in style to the music SNSD previously presented, we were kind of worried as to how people would react. Still, our hearts were beating, and we were all more excited than ever.”
They continued, “We recorded our comeback in front of our fans today. Although it was our first stage, they all perfected their fan-chants, which we’re both glad and grateful for.”
With regards to their ‘all-kill’ on the charts, SNSD remarked, “Because we were all so preoccupied with our comeback preparations, we had no time to go on the internet. It wasn’t until today that we found out about our ranking on the charts. It’s something we didn’t expect, so we’re really thankful for that. There were a lot of songs that we had specially prepared for our album. We wanted to show them off to our fans so we’re glad that they even listened to our album. We have yet to begin our official promotional activities and are already receiving such love, so it makes us feel a bit more responsible to live up to everyone’s expectations.”
When asked whether they’re anticipating a music program win, they responded, “We haven’t thought of it. The members haven’t talked about winning yet. Instead of working with the thought of ‘placing first’, we want to prioritize showing what we couldn’t before. We trust that we will be met with positive results if we continue to work hard.”

Other entertainment labels are currently delaying comebacks and debuts in order to avoid direct competition. The fans threw a surprise event for us where they all held up a placard that said, ‘We missed you.’ It was so moving, we all ended up crying. It was an event brought together with one heart. It was us who had to give our fans joy, but we were grateful to receive such a moving present from our fans instead. We were able to work extra hard on our performances after that, so we’re very thankful.”
When told about the K-Pop flash mobs being held all over the world, the girls said, “The biggest present of all is being able to visit each place in person. We hope that the SM Town’s seniors and juniors will be able to coordinate their schedules and go together.”

Reflecting on their consistent popularity, the girls said, “We held 14 arena tours in Japan. It was a great opportunity to be able to communicate with fans from different places. Our fans continue to give us their love, and we’re both amazed and grateful for that.”

Check out our translations from some of the clips, as well as videos, down below!
===
[On their trainee days:]
Hyoyeon: “Of course, there was singing and dancing, but we also received lessons in acting and foreign languages.”
Jessica: “One thing that was a little difficult was that we couldn’t hang out with our friends a lot, but that was time we invested into ourselves, and it’s thanks to it that we’re the Shoujo Jidai we are today.”
—
[On debuting as a nine-member group:]
Hyoyeon: “Nine members… I thought it was a bit much.”
Jessica: “At the time, there weren’t any other groups with as many members as us in Korea, so we thought it was too much. But we each have different personalities and we show different sides when we’re together, so we’re very happy that we can do activities as a nine-membered group now.”
—
[On their first time in Japan:]
Tiffany: “We were like, ‘Finally, we’re going!’”
Taeyeon: “It was our dream since before our debut, so we were really happy.”
Yuri: “Even so, we had a lot of anxiety as well. We really wanted to show ourselves naturally, so in order to break the language barrier, we studied before our debut.”
Tiffany: “And so we prepared, Sooyoung-chan~”
Sooyoung: “I felt pressure because I’m able to speak Japanese better than the other members. But once I started to think, ‘I have eight friends who are together, so it’s not really pressure’ and ‘Let’s think of it as going on vacation with members and having fun while working’ – it became really fun. I’m sure everyone felt anxious when our Japanese debut was decided, but now we’re having fun.”
—
[On their "Ariake Showcase Live": ]
Taeyeon: “I was really grateful that so many people came to our first live. There’s footage of (people) imitating us, right?”
Sooyoung: “Copy?”
Taeyeon: “People made parody videos, and I could feel that people were taking an interest in us.”
Sooyoung: “I’m sure there are people who know us through the internet, but I think it’s more thanks to our seniors BoA and TVXQ for spreading K-pop. We’ve reaped the rewards from that, so we’re really thankful. We also have to work harder for our juniors.”
—
[Phrases You Like - Part 1]
Taeyeon: “‘Don’t do something you will regret…’ – It’s an unfortunate thing to feel regret. It’s the same when you look back on a day, and since starting this line of work I really started to feel this way. But even now, there are things I regret. I try my best while looking at this phrase.
Yuri: “‘Genius can’t win against those that work hard, and hard workers can’t win against those that have fun.’ – I think the most important thing is something you like and can enjoy. I always try to feel happy when I’m singing and dancing on stage. I try to think positively all the time.”
—
[Overseas Tour]
Jessica: “I was the most happy when we had our first concert abroad. It was my dream. We started in Seoul, Korea and then moved around for our Asia Tour. It was a valuable experience different from our usual stages. I’m also very excited for our first tour in Japan this time.”
Hyoyeon: “Fans cheer passionately for us no matter where we go. Are there any differences?”
Seohyun: “Language.”
Hyoyeon: “Yeah, language is different.”
Tiffany: “The strange thing is, no matter where we go, the fans do the chants in Korean. So I feel there are more similarities.”
—
[Happenings Abroad]
Yoona: “This time, when we came to the airport in Japan, I ended up falling asleep while waiting with the luggage. When I woke up, no one was around. Everyone went outside because they thought I’d gone to the ladies’ room. There are lot of members, so even in Korea, sometimes we lost track of people and left someone behind. But it hadn’t happened in a while.”
Jessica: “It happened a lot when we first debuted.”
Yoona: “It had been a while, so I was really surprised, but I also laughed. I was used to it, so I wasn’t scared. I figured they were outside and there they were.”
Tiffany: “We all thought, ‘Is Yoona in the ladies’ room? If we wait for her, she’ll come.’ We didn’t doubt that and waited for around 15 minutes without realising we’d left her there. It was like ‘Home Alone’.”
—
[Phrases You Like - Part 2]
Sunny: “‘Do your best in any moment!’ – I didn’t have a phrase to live by until now, but I thought of this in a hurry just now. If you always do your best, whether it’s while having fun or following your heart, I don’t think you’ll have regrets. I took a little bit from everyone’s. I tried condensing everyone’s.”
Seohyun: “‘The final winner is a good person.’ – Things that you do will come back to you in one way or another. I’ve experienced this a lot. If you do good things, it will always come back to you in the end. I always try to act with this phrase in mind.”
—
[2011 Tohoku Earthquake]
Yoona: “The day before the earthquake, we were in Japan, but on the day of, we went to Thailand for a performance. We found out about it in Thailand.”
Taeyeon: “I was worried about the staff in Japan so I contacted them right away. But the call didn’t go through easily, so we weren’t able to confirm their safety immediately. All the members were really surprised and worried.”
Sooyoung: “My mother heard we were holding a concert in Japan and she said, ‘You guys are a group that send messages through songs. Even if it’s foreign songs that are not your own, why don’t you sing songs that can be of some help?’ She gave me advice this way.”
Tiffany: “We will work hard so that we can deliver more happiness. I want to continue singing to express good energy.”
—
[Phrases You Like - Part 3]
Tiffany: “‘Today is my day.’ – Even though I’m always doing my best, sometimes, I still get in a bad mood. If I think it’s ‘my day’, I start feeling better, like I’m the protagonist.”
—
[Future Dreams]
Tiffany: “(Lives) are where you can meet fans at a short difference and perform, so as long as it’s possible, I want to hold lives in lots of places.”
Yuri: “My goal is to be able to sing on stage with all nine members for a long time.”

Shoujo Jidai (SNSD) released their first Japanese album “GIRLS’ GENERATION” on June 1st and the girls have sold an astounding 232,000 copies in the first week; vaunting the girls to the top spot onOricon’s Weekly Album chart.
This is an amazing feat because SNSD has also topped their senior BoA’s record. BoA released “LISTEN TO MY HEART” back on March 2002 and sold 231,000 copies, so she has held that record for 9 years and 3 months. SNSD now has the title of best first week sales on a debut album amongst all foreign artists!
Since their debut with “GENIE” last September, this is the first time for the group to top the Oricon Weekly Chart when including both singles and full album. SNSD also became the second foreign female group to have their first album at #1, the other first place group is Russian duo t.A.T.u’s “t.A.T.u” (released in March 2003); so it has been 8 years and 3 months since that was last achieved. Additionally, SNSD is the first ever Korean female group to have their debut album at number one.
SNSD started their first Japanese tour at the end of May stating, “We’re grateful to our fans that always support us in getting our Japanese debut album to #1 on Oricon. The chart is great, of course, but the fact that so many people are listening to our album is even better and makes us all so happy. We sincerely hope that this album gives the people of Japan even just a bit more courage and a light of hope”.
Furthermore, other Korean artists who have had a weekly number one this year include: Tohoshinki’s single (February), KARA’s single (April), Jang Keun Suk’s single (May), BIGBANG’s album (May) andFTISLAND’s album (May). Including this week, that makes 6 Korean artists who have topped the Oricon charts this year.
On the June 6th broadcasting of Japanese music program “Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ“, the girls ofSNSD performed their latest single, “Mr. Taxi“!
They’ve been blitzing across music shows of late, in addition to their concert activities, but the hectic schedule seems to be paying off.

On June 1st, the ladies of SNSD released their first full-length Japanese album and after the first day, the album topped the Oricon daily albums chart by selling 73,583 units. Now, with the second day of sales tallied it’s been revealed that the girls have broken the 100,000 sales mark threshold!
With a second day sales figure of 48,428 units the girls have officially sold a total of 122,011 units! If you can recall, back in November, popular group KARA released their album, “Girl’s Talk” and it sold a total of 107,000 units it’s first week, marking that monumental feat as the first album by a non-Japanese Asian girl group in Japan in 6 years and 9 months to sell more than 100,000 album copies in its first week.
