The Mixtape & Monthly Mashup

2 December:

November has come to an end, and we’re already missing some of the tracks that were introduced to the K-Pop scene over the past month. Through our feature, the ‘allkpop Monthly Mashup’, you’ll get to enjoy a compilation of hits condensed to the length of just one song.
We’ll be bringing in a mashup at the end of each month, so be sure to collect them all to create a yearly non-stop party remix! You’ll notice the ending is a bit abrupt because it will continue next month. Once the year comes to an end, come back to download the entire nonstop mix. (If you haven’t heard October‘s mashup yet, be sure to check it out here)

allkpop Monthly Mashup: October 2011 Mashup by allkpopmusic

23 October:

Welcome to ‘The Mixtape‘, a special bi-weekly feature that brings you the best K-Pop playlists! We’ll be sharing songs that we think you guys should really check out, and possibly introduce you to some great tracks that you might not have heard before – all of which surrounds a special theme.
As K-Pop continues to grow and expand, we’re finding our favorite artists experimenting with more mature themes and content in their music. Unfortunately, those who go a little too far with their creativity get branded with the infamous ban from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF), which restricts younger audiences from purchasing and being exposed to these ‘harmful’ songs.
While we can understand why certain songs get restricted from younger audiences, there are definitely more moments where we just shake our heads and think that the MOGEF’s reasons are outright ridiculous. For the first time, we’re finding more and more songs getting censored and subsequently re-released with alternative lyrics, just so that the song will pass regulations for public broadcast and promotions.
So, here’s a playlist of our favorite “forbidden” K-Pop songs. Some, but not all, of these tracks have not had their ban lifted, so if you’re sensitive to issues regarding sex, alcohol, drug use, or unconventional dating, this playlist may not be for you.
But who are we kidding? You guys are probably more interested now, so check out our mixtape below!
===
✪ TVXQ – “Mirotic” ✪
We kick off our playlist with “Mirotic”, which is one of the biggest ‘banned’ cases yet. The song was accused of using overly sexual and provocative lyrics, which led the group to release a clean version, changing the line in their chorus from “[I've got you] under my skin” to “[I've got you] under my sky.”
Unfortunately for the boys, their ban was lifted after their promotional activities.
===
✪ CSJH’s Dana & Sunday – “One More Chance” ✪
The girls (well, half of them) returned this year after a long hiatus with “One More Chance”, which immediately got stamped with a restricted youth sticker upon its release.
The quirky track was deemed inappropriate for youth because of lines like “I don’t like soju because the glass is too small. It make my face look bigger. The rice wine glass is big and holds much more.”
We get that kids shouldn’t drink, however, does it make any sense that comparing shot glasses to the size of your face really encourages drinking?
2PM – “Hands Up!”
While on the topic of alcoholic beverages, I think you all saw this one coming. Although they had one of the biggest hits this summer, 2PM’s song got banned because of the line, “Get your hands up and put your drinks up“. 2PM then had to re-release their party jam with the alternate lyric, “Put your hands up and put your dreams up“.
Well, I think we can summarize that switch-up with one word: Bleh. This song was meant to be a club-banger, not a campfire sing-along, thank you very much.
✪ E.Via – “Oppa, Can I Do It?” ✪
Play the track for about 5 seconds and I think we can all agree that this song deserved its ban. The controversial track caused a stir during its release for its sexual themes and innuendo. We can’t really say much about this track except that it’s somewhat catchy and she can rap really fast.
✪ 10cm – “Americano” ✪
10cm’s hit song, “Americano”, was slapped with the label, ‘Hazardous for children’. The MOGEF argued that its lyrics were hazardous to a child’s concept of a ‘clean romantic relationship’ with the other sex. They pointed out a particular line that said, “Having a cigarette with a pretty lady and having a cup of tea, while kissing another woman and having a cigarette”.
Scandalous.
✪ Seungri – “Strong Baby” ✪
Seungri launched his solo career with his hit track, “Strong Baby.” The song (which featured raps from fellow Big Bang member G-Dragon) was immediately banned from networks like KBS due to its use of the word, “crack.”
I think we all know that song has nothing to do with the actual drug, but Seungri eventually conceded to replace the word “crack” with “clap”. To this day, you still can’t purchase the track in Korea unless you’re over 19.
✪ B2ST – “On Rainy Days” ✪
Just like with 2PM, the MOGEF banned B2ST’s “On Rainy Days” because of references to alcohol. “I should stop drinking, I think I’m drunk” was the controversial line, which the MOGEF argued created an image that encouraged underage teens to drink as well.
You’d think that with the line literally stating, “I should stop drinking“, it would communicate that drinking isn’t doing anyone any favors.
✪ Psy – “Right Now” ✪
Psy, who made an electrifying comeback with his single “Right Now”, was given the R-19 sticker due to his use of “obscene lyrics.” The “obscene” lyric in question was “Life is toxic like alcohol.” The MOGEF claims that his song encourages juvenile delinquency in teenagers, however the track doesn’t really encourage the act of drinking, so the ban doesn’t really make any sense to us.
Anyhow, Psy seemed to make light of the ban as he sarcastically cracked out, “This is why my life is toxic like alcohol.
✪ GD&TOP – “Knock Out” ✪
GD&TOP‘s third title track, “Knock Out“, was banned because the title of the track and its lyrics use slang, which they believed would damage the national psyche. The song itself has been popular on music charts, and news of the song’s ban quickly became a controversy amongst fans and netizens alike. The majority are of the belief that the ban is “ridiculous and out of line.”
✪ Block B – “Freeze! ✪
Banned not just once, but twice, Block B’s “Freeze” was charged by the MOGEF for containing lyrics describing unwholesome dating methods. Two lines in particular were deemed to be unacceptable: “Send all of your friends home”, and “I’m waiting for you right here.”
I suppose MOGEF finds it inappropriate to date without your friends around. If anything, the MOGEF could have found a quasi-plausible reason in how Zico seems to be shouting “F*** this” instead of “Focus“.

3 September:

Welcome to ‘The Mixtape‘, a special bi-weekly feature that brings you the best K-pop playlists! We’ll be sharing songs that we think you guys should really check out, and possibly introduce you to some great tracks that you might not have heard before – all of which surrounds a special theme.
This edition is dedicated to the incoming wave of comebacks slated to hit the industry this fall. We’ve picked the Top 10 tracks that really signalled a 180-degree shift in an idol’s career.
Check ‘em out below!
☆ Girl’s Day – Nothing Lasts Forever“ ☆
Do you guys remember that song “Tilt My Head” by Girls’ Day? Yeah, I don’t want to either.
Though the girls had a rough debut, they truly redeemed themselves with this powerful track. Preserving their outgoing charisma, they cranked up their appeal by donning fierce leather outfits and ditching the heavy autotune they were once mocked for. Not only did they received praise for their change in sound, netizens took them more seriously as a talented young girl group.
☆ Wonder Girls – Nobody“ ☆
The Wonder Girls shot to fame with their smash hit, “Tell Me”, but what set them apart from other K-pop artists is the fact they successfully tapped into the U.S. market. Receiving international recognition by placing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and touring with the Jonas Brothers, the Wonder Girls set a milestone for other K-pop acts thanks to their biggest hit, “Nobody.”
-
☆ Brown Eyed Girls – Abracadabra“☆
Long before the girls cast their hypnotic spell on us, they were a simply a talented R&B based group with a modest fanbase. Humbly performing at small venues, it seemed as though the girls would inevitably fade.
That all changed in July of 2009 after they unleashed their heavy synth-pop track, “Abracadabra”. The global K-Pop community was absolutely dumbfounded by these sexy sirens, who almost seemed to appear out of thin air. The girls skyrocketed to superstardom, and haven’t looked back since.
☆ SNSD – Gee“ ☆
The impact of “Gee” on SNSD’s career was so massive, that many believed it was SNSD’s very first single. The girls actually debuted in 2007, and the song came out in 2009, nuking records right, left, and center. The most notable record is that SNSD won #1 for nine straight weeks on ‘Music Bank’, in addition to grabbing the triple crown achievement on SBS’s ‘Inkigayo’.
☆ IU – “Good Day“ ☆
Though IU gained some recognition with her song, “Boo”, it wasn’t until she teamed up with producers Lee Min Soo and Kim Lee Na that she became a household name.
Strike that — thanks to “Good Day”, IU actually became meme-worthy with her impressive 3-range note. We’ve included our favorite parody clip below.
☆ Big Bang – Lies” ☆
Big Bang’s initial success was limited to a smaller crowd compared to their fellow K-pop competitors back in the day. It wasn’t until “Lies” that Big Bang exploded onto the K-pop scene. The offered something fresh and unique to K-pop at a time when music was centered around ballads and bubblegum pop. The piano driven house-pop track infused an anthemic pop chorus with slick rap verses. It was through this track (and the following ones from the same album) that we saw a shift in music trends for K-pop.
☆ Lee Hyori – U Go Girl” ☆
As explosive as her debut was, Hyori’s second album failed to reach the heights of her first. The lead single of her “Dark Angel” album, “Get Ya”, was accused for plagiarizing Britney Spears’ single, “Do Something”, which forced her to prematurely end her promotions. Two years later, Hyori redeemed herself with “U Go Girl”, whose smash-hit status restored her title as Korea’s sexy pop queen.
☆ SECRET – “Shy Boy” ☆
Before “Shy Boy”, SECRET was one of those girl groups that were nice to listen to, but hardly a leader of the pack. That all changed with “Shy Boy”, an infectious retro-pop track that drove the boys wild and even charmed the ladies (a difficult feat considering how hard it is to impress female K-Pop fans). The song was refreshing to listen to, and it was so successful that it signalled other K-Pop groups to start releasing retro-flavored songs of their own this year.
☆ KARA – “Mister” ☆
KARA possesses one of those success stories that make you marvel at how far determination can take you. These girls didn’t enjoy a very strong debut, and they had to struggle to stay relevant by constantly appearing on variety shows. One of their members quit, and it took a while for the public to gain a good grasp of the group’s identity. Slowly, they began seeing the fruits of their labor with the successes of “Honey” and “Wanna”, but it was “Mister” (and its corresponding ‘butt dance’) that really put them on the radar.
☆ Baek Ji Young – “I Won’t Love” ☆
Ok, so Baek Ji Young technically isn’t an idol, but she’s managed to make one hell of a comeback and we felt she had to be included in this playlist.
Baek Ji Young is consistent chart-topper today, and it’s hard to believe that she fell from grace in her early years. She debuted with a string of latin-tingled dance hits that were well-received, however, success quickly came to a halt after a sex scandal leaked out that tainted her public image. For a long time, it seemed impossible for her to reclaim popularity in the K-pop market.
Five years later, she climbed back to the sun with a heartbreaking ballad titled “I Won’t Love”, blowing prejudices out the window as everyone marvelled over her talent once again.  Since then, she became one of the most sought-out vocalists for Korean OST ballads, while still being able to maintain the versatility of dance music.

19 August:

Welcome to ‘The Mixtape‘, a special bi-weekly feature that brings you the best K-pop playlists! We’ll be sharing songs that we think you guys should really check out, and possibly introduce you to some great tracks that you might not have heard before – all of which surrounds a special theme.
Inspired by the increasing amount of throwback tracks emerging in K-Pop these days, this issue is dedicated to the Top 10 ‘retro-flavored‘ songs. We’re using the term ‘Retro’ loosely to describe the trends in K-pop that borrow heavily from older musical styles.
In this playlist, there’s some disco, there’s some funk, and definitely a whole lot of aegyo waiting ahead, so grab your vintage shades and let’s roll out!
==
♧ SNSD – “Hoot” ♧
SNSD kicked off the retro trend in K-pop (at least for 2011) with the wildly infectious “Hoot”. These ladies tipped their hats to James Bond and told the rest of the world “From Korea with Love” as they blasted hearts left and right with aegyo and their ‘Robin Hood’ dance.
-
♧ Wonder Girls – Tell Me ♧
If we can associate any K-pop group dedicated to retro pop, it’d be the Wonder Girls. While we really wanted to put “Nobody” in here, “Tell Me” won out because it was the defining moment that really put these girls on the map. The song actually credits ’80s pop sensation Stacey Q in its title, since her smash single “Two of Hearts” was the base for “Tell Me”. And let’s not forget that retro-fantastic dance routine that took the nation by a storm and spawned a whole lotta YouTube dance covers!
-
♧ SECRET – Starlight Moonlight ♧
I don’t think anyone predicted the success SECRET would achieve with their left-field sound, but I think we’re all glad they did. SECRET brought a fresh sound to K-pop with hits like “Madonna” and “Shy Boy” which strayed away from the saturated dance-pop market. With “Starlight Moonlight”, they infused modern K-pop melodies with ’50s doo-wop to create this irresistibly sweet track.
-
♧ UV feat. J.Y. Park – Itaewon Freedom ♧
Believe it or not, this song and video was released in 2011 and it’s personally one of my favorite tracks this year. You just can’t take the gang seriously as they pseudo-seriously take back the night. Having fun is what going retro is all about, and “Itaewon Freedom” embodies that perfectly.
-
♧ Koyote – Good Good Time ♧
Dynamic dance trio Koyote has been around for over a decade with numerous line-up changes, but they still haven’t lost their groove. Known for their catchy beats and melodies, they bring it all back with an updated sound. The beginning is a lot like those ’80s rock ballads from bands like Journey, but the track quickly picks up with a hypnotic electro-dance beat. A very nice blend of old meets new.
-
♧ Uhm Jung Hwa (ft. T.O.P.) – D.I.S.C.O. ♧
If you guys don’t already know, Uhm Jung Hwa is an unforgettable K-pop diva with a impressive collection of dancefloor hits. Not too long ago, she teamed up with YG Entertainment to bring back an old school funk and true to YG form, it became a huge hit. The track pay a bit of homage to Sneaky Sound System’s hit single, “Pictures”, but Uhm Jung Hwa gives the tune her own flair.
-
♧ Yoon Jong Shin (ft. Jung Suk Won, Swings) Love Scanner ♧
One of my favorite tracks released this month, “Love Scanner” is full of old school funk but with a Korean twist. If you’re a fan of retro-flavored artists like Chromeo and Chilly Gonzales, you’ll surely be a fan of this track as well. Time to get out your shades and your dancing shoes, and start “love scanning tonight!”
-
♧ Asoto Union – Think About’Chu ♧
You may not of heard about Asoto Union, but “Think about’Chu” is well deserving of its place on our list. Think old school ballad numbers by artists like the Bee Gees. The electric piano twinkling alongside wailing falsetto voices is bound to take you back to the sounds of the 70’s.
-
♧ Big Mama – “Break Away” ♧
When people think of retro nights, they think of flashy nightclubs where people mingled in questionable outfits and even worse hair. But not everyone went to disco clubs to enjoy a great evening – this track from Big Mama takes us to the quieter side, where you’d stroll over to a late-night cafe for some great jazz and soul.
-
♧ T-ara – Roly-Poly ♧
Finally, we have “Roly-Poly”, which has undeniably become the biggest retro-flavored K-Pop track this year. T-ara promised us a hit as infectious as “Bo Peep Bo Peep” and boy, have they delivered.
“Roly-Poly” is full of disco sounds from start to end with a thumping saw bass in the verses, bells and hand claps in the chorus, and an infectious Fedde Le Grand-like dance break in between. The original music video itself is based on a flashback story line, and their choreography throws in all the popular dance moves from the disco era.

5 August:

Welcome to ‘The Mixtape‘, a special bi-weekly feature that brings you the best K-pop playlists! We’ll be sharing songs that we think you guys should really check out, and possibly introduce you to some great tracks that you might not have heard before – all of which surrounds a special theme.
Our first issue introduced the Top 10 songs for a ‘hot summer‘, and the response was so explosive that we’ve decided to put up ‘Part II’! We’ve listened to your suggestions, and provided another 10 songs that really fit a ‘hot summer’.
Check ‘em out below!
==
☼ MBLAQ – Mona Lisa
Summertime usually means that pop songs get that Spanish twist to channel the sultry heat of Spain. For their latest hit, “Mona Lisa”, MBLAQ threw in a melody infused with a flamenco flavor, and they also made their hottest image transformation to date. We couldn’t think of a better song than this to kick off the second edition of a ‘hot summer’ playlist!
==
☼ Mighty Mouth feat. Soya – “Fiesta” ☼
Speaking of Spanish flavor, Mighty Mouth and Soya teamed up to bring you one of the best summer tracks so far this year. Titled “Fiesta”, this song makes you want to hit up a beach party with your friends and if you’re crazy enough, to do the conga. BUT NO SHAME! Anything goes in a fiesta!
==
☼ Cool – Woman of the Sea”  ☼
While we’re at the beach, we might as well introduce to you the greatest ’seaside’ hit of all-time. For those of you who aren’t very familiar with this group, Cool were considered to be the best remedy to summer’s brutal heatwaves. They’d drop an album chock-full of tracks that would play in every bar, club, or chilling spot, reviving everyone from the humidity and heat. While their influence has waned over the years, their ‘cool’ legacy still lives on with their ultimate summer classics.
==
☼ Park Myung Soo & SNSD’s Jessica – “Naengmyun” ☼
In our last edition, we introduced ‘Kimbap‘ to represent summer because of all the nostalgia it holds for us. But we totally forgot about ‘Naengmyun‘! Naengmyun is a noodle dish immersed in a cold soup that’s a staple in many Korean households during the summer. Just like how the actual dish is refreshing, Jessica’s sweet vocals deliver that same effect in this cute duet with Park Myung Soo.
==
☼ HyunA – Bubble Pop!” ☼
For guys, no summer is complete without spotting a cute girls in shorts. In fact, it’s practically the signal to the start of the summer season when girls put away their parkas and emerge in hot outfits that make guys double back and say ‘Daaaang!‘. HyunA’s “Bubble Pop” definitely drives that point home, and although it got blocked from TV for being a little too sexy, it undoubtedly proves that her music video is one of the hottest Korea’s seen this season.
==
☼ 1TYM - “Hot Hot” ☼
“Hot Ddeuguh” (translated literally as “Hot Hot”) was blasting from every speaker in Korea back in the day because it carried a certain swag in its beat that made guys feel like they were smooth players. It had its effect on the ladies too, who (and I kid you not, I’ve seen this happen) would suddenly switch up the style of their walk into a sexy strut down the street.
==
☼ – After School Red - “Into the Night Sky” ☼
One of the great things about summer is having the time to go on those night-time joy rides. The car is personally my favorite place to listen to music because I can just clear my mind of stress and pressure built up from daily annoyances. Here, After School Red sings about a letting go from a break-up on a laid-back, mellow dance beat, which is perfect for those therapeutic night-time drives.
==
☼ Nell – “Moonlight Punch Romance” ☼
Nell is definitely one of the most talented artists out there in the music industry. People who enjoy good music always pick Nell as one of their favorites when they discuss artists, and it’s only natural, considering how they’re Seo Taiji’s proteges. This track is actually one of the less popular ones from his album, “Separation Anxiety”, but the intro guitar line hits the right spot for me every time.
==
☼ Shinhwa - “Eussya Eussya (Let’s Go!)” ☼
As you guys have Super Junior, TVXQ, and Big Bang these days, I (along with the other 80s-90s babies) had Shinhwa and g.o.d. War would break out when the respective fans met at concerts, and although I didn’t follow either of them passionately, my sister was a die-hard Shinhwa fan. But anyways, this song by Shinhwa is one of my all-time favorite summer jams. I still sing it when I go to karaoke!
==
☼ DJ DOC - “Summer Story” ☼
DJ DOC’s summer story was the track that brought a new light to their career. It showcased a more playful side, and became an instant classic. It even had a winter version made after its success, so this song is a track you guys can’t miss out on. Despite its uplifting pop beat, this song’s actually about a failed summer romance.
Well, since it’s summer, let’s forget about all our troubles and just keep dancing!

15 July:

Welcome to ‘The Mixtape‘, a special bi-weekly feature that brings you the best K-pop playlists! We’ll be sharing songs that we think you guys should really check out, and possibly introduce you to some great some tracks that you might not have heard before – all of which surround a special theme.
For our first playlist, we’ve picked the Top 10 songs for a ‘hot summer‘. Check it out below!
==
01. < GG (Park Myung Soo, G Dragon) (ft. Park Bom) – I Cheated >
This right here is my K-pop summer anthem, and this track’s “All-Kill” status in Korea proves that I’m not the only one! Now we here at allkpop don’t condone cheating or affairs, so don’t worry! The title actually means ‘going out of control’. The comedic duo team up with Park Bom on this track to create the ultimate party hit. Whether you’re out dancing in a club in Gangnam or leaving Hongdae to meet up with some friends in Itaewon, this track gets you pumped up to go all out, partying with “swee~” “swag.”
==
02. < 2PM, Girls’ Generation – CABI (Caribbean Bay) >
What do you get when you throw 2PM and SNSD together on a set? Shirtless fun and jaw-dropping bodies, which make them the perfect representatives for this upcoming track! ‘CABI (Caribbean Bay)’ is a popular water park in Korea that the two groups did a track for in 2010 under the same name. I don’t know about you guys, but when summer starts to kick in, I just itch for the thrill of roller coasters and high-rise water slides. While I can’t guarantee that any of us will end up having a fling with Yoona or Taecyeon this summer, we can all still have a good time jamming to this track.
==
03. < MC Mong – Ice Cream >
What’s a hot summer without ice cream? This uplifting MC Mong classic is a favorite for most K-pop listeners. On this track, MC Mong describes how his heart melts for a certain girl, and that his love is sweet like ice cream. Whether you’re talking about the song or the actual dessert, either sounds pretty refreshing right about now!
==
04. < Jadu – Kimbap >
For many Korean families, kimbap is the quintessential food for picnics, church barbecues, and of course, for long road-trips. You seriously can’t go to any of these events without a beaming ahjummabringing in her special recipe.
BRB, gotta bug our moms for some kimbap!
==
05. < Humming Urban Stereo – Hawaiian Couple >
Humming Urban Stereo opens up their track with the line, “So cute, you’re so cute!” and this track is exactly just that. Summer isn’t the same without some romance, is it? From the relaxing ukulele to the soothing vocals guiding the song, this track just exudes that sweetness we feel when we’re falling in love, making it the perfect song for summer lovin’.
==
06. < Clazziquai – She Is>
We technically covered summer romances, but weddings deserve a separate song of their own! Summer often signals the start of a new life for many couples, and no wedding is complete without that special love song.
Clazziquai’s “She Is” describes a man’s moving confession on how his lover brings light and warmth to his cold heart. The kicker? “Your strong love has given meaning to my life.”
==
07. < House Rulez – Summer Breeze>
Here’s a track full of summery funk. House Rulez is one of the many underrated groups who continuously puts out quality tracks in Korea. With a retro base track reminiscent of bands like Sister Sledge from the 70’s, you’re bound to disco down to this groovy beat.
==
08. < Rain – It’s Raining>
Unfortunately, summer doesn’t always guarantee us perfect sunshine and weather. Sudden storms and harsh weather are some things many of us experience during this season, but that doesn’t stop K-pop superstar Rain from having a good time! If you feel the weather’s bringing you down, crank up that volume and “let the music control your body.”
==
09. < 2PM – 10 out of 10>
Let’s face it, one of the greatest things about summer is being able to shamelessly scope out sexy people showing some skin. If that’s your calling, then “10 out of 10″ must be your anthem. Aside from all that, the track is just goofy and a lot of fun, and 2PM’s got the perfect attitude for summer.
==
10. < f(x) – Hot Summer>
Of course, you can’t have a hot summer playlist without “Hot Summer.” Personally, I find that the track is a great depiction of what summer’s all about. The heat can be unbearable at times, but in the end, there’s so much to do and so much fun to look forward to. With a feisty, aggressive beat and infectious hooks, “Hot Summer” will surely have you singing along throughout the season.
