On November 11th, Mnet‘s ‘Superstar K3‘ finally declared its winner after a long, nerve-wracking audition process. It came down to the wire for finalists Ooh La La Session and Busker Busker, but in the end, Ooh La La Session was ultimately crowned the winner.
For the first round, the contestants were given the freedom to sing a song of their choice. Busker Busker performed Lee Soo Young‘s “I Believe“, while Ooh La La Session performed Lee Sora‘s “I’m Happy“.
In the second round, the contestants were assigned songs to perform. Ooh La La Session was assigned “With You“, a song composed by Park Keun Tae and Kim Do Hoon, while Busker Busker was assigned “People of Seoul“, a song Jang Bum Joon had personally helped write and compose. Both teams put on phenomenal performances, receiving an explosive response from the audience members.
The final vote was decided by combining the judges’ votes (35%), with viewers’ votes via text messaging (60%), and online votes (5%). Ooh La La Session came out on top, winning a cash prize of $440,000 USD as well as a car.
Lim Yoon Tek of Ooh La La Session thanked his fellow members who’ve stuck by him for the past 15 years. “People have told us that we were good, but that we would never be able to come this far,” he said. “I want to give the glory to our parents and everyone who has loved and supported us up until now.”
Maknae Park Kwang Sun added, “We put our lives on the line to be here. Every day we continued on the program was a miracle. We worked really hard, thank you so much.” Park Kwang Sun is known to have donated one of his kidneys to his mother, and so this victory was all the more meaningful for his family. Kim Myung Hoon kissed his mother and promised her that he would treat her to the best things he could offer her.
Park Seung Il remarked, “During the past 15 years I’ve spent alongside Lim Yoon Tek, so many people told me that I was immature. We were very distraught last year and became very discouraged, but through this rare opportunity, we once again confirmed that past 15 years were not in vain. I’m so grateful.”
Congratulations to Ooh La La Session!
4 November:
On November 4th, fans of Mnet‘s ‘Superstar K3‘ witnessed an intense battle between Two Months,Ooh La La Session, and Busker Busker to earn one of the top two positions.
Two Months’ Kim Yerim and Do Dae Yoon performed Rumble Fish‘s “Its Gonna be a Good Day“, but they were criticized for being unoriginal and for failing to hit the proper notes. As such, the judges decided that they would not advance to the final round.
Member Kim Yerim teared up as she said, “I know we have a lot to learn still, but thank you for supporting us and letting us advance to the Top 3. Thank you to Dae Yoon who came all the way to Korea with me; I would also like to thank my family, the staff, and the judges as well.”
Do Dae Yoon added, “I’m upset that we were eliminated because my parents came to see us perform, but I’m happy that we were able to at least make it this far.”
With Two Months eliminated, things should heat up next week between Ooh La La Session and Busker Busker as they compete for the winner’s position.
31 October:
Now that the contestants have been whittled down to the ‘Top 3′, Mnet‘s ‘Superstar K3‘ is as tension-filled as ever! For the first time in the show’s history, all three of the top contestants are groups, with the last solo, Christina, eliminated last week.
Get to know ULALA Session, Busker Busker, and Two Months before they head into the final match that could catapult them into superstardom in the coming weeks!
– ULALA Session –
Comprised of five members, this male group is best known for their control. Over the course of five live stages, they’ve proven that they can blend in and out of genres from dance to ballads with a unique charm that keeps people on their toes. They’ve covered everything from Rain‘s “Bad Guy” to “Western Sky“.
The ability to pull this off so seamlessly stems from the fact that each of their members has exceptional vocal talents. The boys proved they can each sing by covering the pop song “Open Arms“. Not only that, but the group received praise for their ability to sing with believable emotions.
Judge Yoon Jong Shin stated, “Singing is not about the beat or the technique, but the feelings, emotions, and your level of honesty. There’s something about you in all of these things – you all sing with truth.”
Official Me2day: ULALA Session
– Busker Busker –
This unique trio is comprised of Jang Bum Joon (vocal, guitar), Bradley (drums), and Kim Hyung Tae (bass). Unfortunately, the group has gone through quite the bumpy road, as judges have always criticized the vocalist’s unstable live skills.
They were, however, able to make a return back into the game by proving that they could make up for their weaknesses through their uniqueness and creativity. This was enough to win the audience over, as their text votes from the audience made up for their low score from the judges, catapulting them into the ‘Top 3′.
Their shining moment happened during the ‘Top 4′ finals, where they showed the extent of their creativity with a one-of-a kind arrangement of ‘Makgeollina‘. The lead vocal’s shortcomings were covered by the way he was able to harmonize with the drums and the bass, working in tune with the audience. Judges and viewers alike realized that Busker Busker was not a band you could judge on vocal talent alone, as it is the combination of their talents that truly makes them sparkle.
Fortunately, this worked for the judges, as Yoon Jong Shin commented, “I always thought that you guys had that good feel, but weren’t able to live up to it because you were a bit shaky and not on beat. Now that I see you today, however, I realize that you are not a lacking team, but a creative one that extends out from the standards set by others.”
Official Me2day: Busker Busker
– Two Months –
Two Months is a co-ed duo comprised of Kim Yerim and Do Daeyoon. The duo has made their mark on the show through Do Daeyoon’s expansive growth, but judges often thought that he lacked the same presence as Kim Yerim. For a while now, Kim Yerim has been at the forefront of the group thanks to her unique voice and beauty, and the fact that Do Daeyoon only performed an instrument and did not sang further spread that gap.
With each new performance, Do Daeyoon managed to step up his game and not only bring out the true colors of what Two Months is all about, but also his own colors. He did this by putting down his guitar with his new found confidence and finally grabbing hold of a mic. Judges were ecstatic when he threw out his guitar in the middle of singing “Brown City” and harmonized his own smooth, low-toned voice with Kim Yerim’s unique one. It was only then that judges felt that Two Months was “finally complete”.
Judge Lee Seung Chul praised, “Do Daeyoon has finally gained some confidence, and I’m glad that he was able to let us hear his voice.” Yoon Jong Shin added,“I didn’t think that you would show us all of the extent of your vocal talent, but what I could hear was charming.”
15 October:
October 15th saw a new episode of ‘Superstar K3‘, and this week’s theme revolved around ”A Song dedicated to you“.
Contestant Christina from New York re-vamped the original version of “Firefly” and put on an impressive performance for the judges. The lyrics “Don’t Leave” were especially noteworthy.
“When I was in college, there was this man I dated. I loved him dearly, but every time we fought, he would raise his hand to me,” she revealed. “When I was with him, I abandoned all my friends. All I wanted in life was him. Even though he hurt me so bad, I begged him not to leave.”
Despite her painful past, Christina transformed into a confident, mature woman. She put on her best performance, as if to show her ex-boyfriend what she’s become without him.
Judge Lee Seung Chul remarked, “I think she’s the best vocalist I’ve seen in the past three seasons. She’s excellent. She seemed like an amateur in the beginning, but she’s become more than a professional now. I like that she’s becoming an entertainer as well,” and gave her 95 points.
Yoon Mirae (Tasha) remarked, “She never disappoints. She has a beautiful soul“, and gave her 97 points, while Yoon Jong Shin stated, “She progressively puts more emotion into each performance. She started strong today, however, the end was a little disappointing,” and gave her a 91.
Overall, Christina received scores in the 90s from all three judges.
14 October:
Many viewers have been wondering why Mnet’s ‘Superstar K3‘ won’t reveal the rankings for its contestants. On October 13th, a staff member from ‘Superstar K3′ explained, “We only reveal the results on whether or not the contestants passed to the next round, in order to hide the rankings from the contestants.”
“The show gets broadcasted live,” he continued, “and that means the contestants themselves can see the rankings. We thought it would be better for them not to know the rankings because they might get hurt, or it might affect their performance.”
He concluded, “Instead, once ‘Superstar K3′ ends, we plan to reveal all the votes and results from the live shows.”
The third live-stage show from ‘Superstar K3′ will be broadcasted on October 14th, so be sure not to miss it!
8 October:
On October 7th, Mnet‘s ‘Superstar K3‘ aired its second live episode of the season, which saw the exit of two contestants. At the end of the episode, it was revealed that contestants Lee Kun Yul and Lee Jung Ah were eliminated from this week’s round, and would not be continuing on to next week’s ‘TOP 7′ level.
Lee Kun Yul stated, “Although my father is not here, I thank my mother. The staff members worked so hard, I’m really thankful towards them. Please look forward to a better side of me”, and did not lose his bright smile even towards the end.
Lee Jung Ah commented, “I enjoyed myself until now so am glad. I have no regrets. I was content with the performance I gave today.” She also talked about her father who recently passed away and said, “I think he would have liked seeing me on stage.”
This week’s theme was ‘Pop Songs’, and Lee Kun Yul performed Stevie Wonder‘s “Part Time Lover” while Lee Jung Ah sang the Eagles‘ “Desperado“.
The remaining Top 7 contestants of this season’s ‘Superstar K’ are Buscar Buscar, Shin Ji Soo, Kim Do Hyun, Oohlala Session, Chris, Christina, and Two Months.
Two Months’ Kim Ye Rim has been catching the eyes of netizens with her strong singing voice and attractive looks, and even received compliments from Super Junior‘s Kyuhyun during a meal with the ‘Superstar K’ and Super Junior members.Source: Joy News via Daum - allkpop

On September 2nd, Mnet’s ‘Superstar K3‘ aired footage of their preliminary auditions in China. Contestant Xiaofei (Huang Yi Fei) has been earning much attention for her past experience as a JYP Entertainment trainee under the Chinese girl group, ‘Sisters‘.
Xiaofei revealed, “I have experience training and promoting in JYP Entertainment.” Unfortunately, because she injured her wrist while performing, she had to give up her training in order to undergo surgery. She went on to add that she was happy to hear that fellow members Hyelim, Jia, and Feihad debuted, and that she missed and loved them.
For her audition, Xiaofei sang “Whip My Hair” and did a powerful dance cover to ”Who’s That Chick“.
Judge Lee Seung Chul rejected her and commented, “I had a lot of anticipation after reading your profile, but I think you were lacking in your preparation.” However, Kim Tae Woo passed her, saying, “There’s a limit to what you can do as a soloist, but I see your potential as a member of a group.”
Netizens left supportive comments like, “We hope you do your best since this is your second attempt”,and “Looking forward to seeing you!”
Singer Lee Seung Chul shared an embarrassing moment while he was the lead singer for the legendary rock band, Boohwal.

On this day, g.o.d‘s Kim Tae Woo commented hastily, “Do the contestants even practice?” showing his disappointment with the contestants. As a response, Lee Seung Chul said, “I was like that during my Boohwal years” explaining his incompetency during his rookies years as a singer.
Lee Seung Chul then stated, “There was a guitarist who was the hyung of Boohwal leader Kim Tae Won. One day, he just stopped the practice and told me, ‘If I were you, I wouldn’t sing anymore’, and embarrassed me in front of everyone.” Then he added, “So I ended up leaving Boohwal.”
But it was Kim Tae Won who helped Lee Seung Chul continue his passion for singing. Lee Seung Chul said, “Tae Won hyung called me out to a restaurant and had readied spicy rice cake and some alcohol for me. Kim Tae Won said to me, ‘I think you should sing again.‘” As a result, the song “Heeya” came to be what it is today.

Singer/rapper Yoon Mi Rae has been appointed be the female judge of Mnet’s upcoming “Superstar K3″ series.
Succeeding Lee Hyori and Uhm Jung Hwa of seasons one and two respectively, Yoon Mi Rae will begin her role as a fixed judge alongside Lee Seung Chul and Yoon Jong Shin in August during the fourth preliminary rounds.
Mnet stated, “The concept of “Superstar K3″ is still what we announced at the beginning of the year – ‘diversity’. With that being said, we focused heavily on choosing a musician who would harmonize well with the other judges and evaluate the contestants on a diverse level.”
“Yoon Mi Rae is a musician who works in a distinctly different genre, compared to Lee Seung Chul and Yoon Jong Shin. She’s acknowledged for her vocal talents, but we also feel that her stage ownership and ability to perform are both unique and one of the best. The previous judging panels from seasons one and two gave confidence to the producers with their accurate and meticulous judging. As a musician who is both a mother of a child and the wife of a top star, we invited her to become a judge, as we believe she is an artist who has the capability to bring together all audition participants.”
Yoon Mi Rae’s agency expressed, “Yoon Mi Rae underwent a poster photoshoot with Lee Seung Chul and Yoon Jong Shin on the 18th. She did a lot of worrying, but she said she had made up her decision after traveling to China and America for the preliminary rounds. Most importantly, she said she has confidence in Lee Seung Chul and Yoon Jong Shin, as they’ve been doing so well thus far.”
“Rather than looking out for special techniques like the other two judges, Yoon Mi Rae will be judging according to the contestant’s passion, sentiments, and their ability to bring out their own unique colors.”
The first broadcast of “Superstar K3″ will take place on August 12th.

Season three is already beginning to set itself apart from the previous two just by the diversity of talent alone. Director Kim Ki Woong revealed, “Before, there was limited variety in the songs chosen for auditions. Talented singers usually chose rock ballads, but this year, a lot of those standards have been demolished. It could be because we revealed that we’d be judging on diversity above everything else this year, but there are definitely a lot of people pursuing different genres.”
He continued, “Last year, we also stated that the level of talent had increased, and it’s the same for this year as well. There’s a definite difference in the talent level in just the UCC submissions alone. Since there are so many more submissions, we feel that even the first round will be difficult to pass.”

The production team for Mnet’s “Superstar K3” has yet to decide upon their final judge to join Lee Seung Chul and Yoon Jong Shin.
According to an Mnet representative, the panel of judges for “Superstar K3″ have yet to be finalized because it has been difficult to find someone to replace Uhm Jung Hwa.
In order to differentiate themselves from similar programs, this season will feature both a solo and group division. Therefore, they are in need a female singer who can judge both the dancing and the vocal performances.
A Mnet representative stated, “As ‘Superstar K3′ is going for a diverse concept, we are looking for someone who has a strong individuality and will be able to judge from a diverse point-of-view. There is no law that it must be a female. As of now, we are reviewing by opening all possibilities.”
However, an all-male panel of judges may be difficult, since the show’s previous two seasons hosted a female judge. In season 1 there was Lee Hyori and in season 2 there are Uhm Jung Hwa.
Several names of female artists have been put up for consideration, including In Sooni, Yang Hee Eun,Yoon Mirae (Tasha), Baek Ji Young, Ok Joo Hyun, and Park Jung Hyun (Lena Park)
