Recently, online media outlets like Star News, BNT News, Hankyung, TV Report, and others came together for a suicide prevention campaign called “A Beautiful Korea Living Together”.
The campaign aims to fill Korean society with love and hope and has brought together the support of top stars to speak on the issue in hopes of bringing more attention to it. JYJ‘s Jaejoong recently sat down for an interview discussing his thoughts on suicide. Check it out below!
–
Q. “Did you ever think about suicide?”
“I felt sad and upset for the people that had to leave this world in such a manner. Suicide is something that hurts so many people and I think that it just shouldn’t ever happen.”
Q. “You went through a lot of hardships yourself. What was the most painful for you, and how did you overcome it?”
“Every person feels loneliness and is met with a hardship that’s hard to endure. While living life, there are, of course, weights that you feel are only weighing down on you. It’s not a matter of how good or bad the environment you’re living in is, but rather a sort of misery that every person experiences while living life. IN that regards, I, too, have experienced much sadness and loneliness, and the way I overcame those feelings was to love the world I’m living in and think preciously of my work, my loving members, and my family. I also earn strength from my fans. I plan on thanking every day I live for in the future as well.”
Q. “How do you feel hearing about fellow celebrities committing suicide?”
“It was just shocking and an unbelievable reality. I was upset.”
Q. “Do you know any celebrities that are going through depression?”
“I don’t know. They say that depression isn’t something shown on the outside, as people that are depressed as usually bright on the outside and feel depressed when they’re alone. Instead of people that say outright, ‘I’m lonely’, I think it’s more important to care for those that are trying harder than normal to look positive. And as the oldest hyung, I think more than anything, I should be responsible for the psychological health of my members more so than other celebrities.”
Q. “If you were to ever have a fan that was thinking of suicide, what would you say?”
“I believe that our fans won’t think of suicide because I feel that if they listen to our songs, they’ll feel too happy and that their depression will disappear. In our recent album release, there are two songs titled ‘A Boy’s Letter’ and ‘You’re’. They’re both songs written for our fans so we hope that they’ll listen to them when they’re feeling depressed or lonely and hopefully feel consoled. We’re together inside of our music. Please also think of the precious people in your lives and be happy for even the smallest of things. With such a mindset, I’m sure that you’ll feel more affectionate towards your life. The beautiful sky, your mother’s delicious food, and your pet’s cute aegyo are all wonderful things in life.”
Q. “What do you think society needs to do in order to prevent suicide?”
“I think as we go on in our society, people feel more alone than ever. They begin to box themselves up and are afraid of other people coming in their zone. The world keeps making people depend on only themselves and promotes competition amongst one another, but people think that’s what success is so they follow it while losing their freedom and deepening their depression. I hope that we’ll change the atmosphere so that we can prevent such a society.”
Q. “Do you have anything to say to those that are suffering to the point of thinking about suicide?”
“Think of hope the minute you feel miserable with your life. Take up the habit of finding joy in the smallest of things in life. The misery you feel now will be a strong foundation for your future and you will become someone with an invaluable life. Also, hold the hand of the person next to you. Don’t think that you’re the only one living in this world. Don’t grow your sorrow on your own and ask for help from the person next to you.”

He wrote,
“I don’t know if I should be saying this… I miss Yunho and Changmin… No matter what anyone says, they’re our members and I know them better than anyone else… People might say it’s pointless in saying this but… I want to see them again. It’s been a while.”
Jaejoong also tweeted the following:
Source: Twitter via allkpop“Junsu always wakes up before the members and gets his hair and make up done before the tired members. He has always been like that for the past eight years. It’s his sincerity that has allowed us to exist, and I hope to learn from him as a friend and co-worker.
There’s a lot to learn from him in a lifetime.”“Yoochun is always in the middle. He stands in the middle of the members and watches over everyone, which is why we never have any time to feel that we’re alone. He’s one of the most spirited members and he shares that spirit with us so that we feel comfort during difficult times.”
“I have to do better.. That’s what our Junsu and Yoochun make me think. They’re greedy, hoo hoot!”
22 July:
JYJ’s Jaejoong recently sat down for an interview with Newsen and expressed his thoughts on his image as an idol. He also shared his feelings on the controversy surrounding his composition, “Wasurenaide”.
Jaejoong opened the interview by saying, “I feel that I have an image that’s specific to me, something that’s not normal for an idol. I consider myself a celebrity that people either like or dislike, two sides of the extreme. I hated changing who I was, and I was scared that people who liked me would hate me. For example, I have foreign fans who cosplay. To them, that’s a source of joy and a fun hobby, but the minute I change, all of that could be broken.”
But with continuous effort, he’s honed and improved his skills – he’s not only able to compose, but also direct and even act as well. Jaejoong continued, “I was scared to change, but I realized that even if I did it slowly, those who liked me would continue to like me, and I’m grateful for that.”
Recently, controversy arose over a song he composed while under TVXQ titled “Wasurenaide” when a Chinese artist remade it without Jaejoong’s permission.
Fans immediately opposed its release, leading the Chinese artist to state, “I know that there are a lot of memories associated with this song, and I, too, am a fan of Kim Jaejoong’s talent and works. I will reflect on my actions and resolve all matters with Kim Jaejoong.”
Soon afterwards, Jaejoong had written in Japanese on his Twitter, “‘Wasurenaide’ is not my song or anyone else’s. It’s a song that belongs to the five members of TVXQ. That’s why I don’t want to sing it by myself, or with the three members of JYJ.”
In his interview, he explained, “It’s something that occurs often in China, so I didn’t think of taking any particular action against it. I still hope that he won’t sing it, though. Whether or not it’s a song that I composed, it’s a song that belongs to the five members of TVXQ. Even I alone or with the three members of JYJ wouldn’t have dared to sing it.”
He continued, “I feel like it’s causing a wound to those memories that liked and still like TVXQ. The scent of that song conjures what fans believe to be the most beautiful time of TVXQ, and so to sing that song without permission is only wounding the fans.”
When carefully asked if he had no intentions of singing TVXQ’s songs in the future, he quietly nodded his head and replied, “If it’s possible to avoid it, yes…”
Moving onto the topic of conversing with his fans through Twitter, the reporter mentioned that he was direct in expressing himself, much to the point where it was easy for misinterpretations to arise.
Jaejoong didn’t seem to care, though. He explained, “I say what I need to say. I know that it may garner a negative response, but I don’t think it’s wrong. I’m not writing a personal opinion, but a feeling that I think is felt by others, by everyone…”
Commenting on his first Korean drama, he said, “I never had any greed for the leading role. I think it’s more important to consider how to breathe life into my character. For now, I want to be acknowledged for giving life to my supporting role. I really don’t have any intentions of getting greedy for a leading role.”
21 July:
JYJ member Jaejoong shared a comical photo of himself via Twitter with the humorous caption, “Everybody smile! Boss with his legs spread wide.”

Netizens commented, “You’re more flexible than I expected, ” “What are you thinking about?” “You look so handsome even with such a funny pose,” and “Please show us Son Dambi’s ‘Crazy’ dance.”
Jaejoong will star in SBS ’s upcoming romantic comedy drama, ‘Protect the Boss‘ which will begin airing on August 3rd.

13 April:JYJ’s Jaejoong recently sat down with Hankooki for an lengthy interview, where he opened up to talk about a variety of personal matters such as dating, his Twitter account, and his music career.
Check it out below:
–
Jaejoong had just finished another interview with a different newspaper company at a cafe in Seoul when he met with Hankooki, and at the time, he looked bright and happy as he had “drunk a few glasses of wine.”
While on their way to a pub in Samsong-dong for the interview, Jaejoong began to share his thoughts on the recent Japanese earthquake and radioactive problem as a way to ‘break the ice’ in the car. Surprised by his considerably profound opinions on the matter, the interviewer asked, “Do you read a lot of books?”, to which the singer answered, “Rather than books, I learn a lot from other people.”
After arriving at the pub, Jaejoong put down a total of six cellphones on the aluminum table, one of which include the phone he uses in Japan. He explained that each phone is for business-related use, and doesn’t own a particular phone just for family. Jaejoong also revealed that there was a time when he deleted over 1,000 contacts, saying, “As I kept plowing through my troubles with my own strength, I realized that I had become distant with a few people. I didn’t keep in contact out of my gloom, which is why I think I have a smaller number of people around me for support now… But with that being said, I still have my members and fans.”
Within Jaejoong’s words also contained a deeper level of complications and hardships. The biography on his personal Twitter reads ‘JYJ from 東方神起 always keep the faith‘, and on the interview day, Jaejoong tweeted ‘JYJ.‘. The singer explained, “The fact that TVXQ was my first is definite, and that will never change. There’s no other reason behind it. It’s the same as for my ‘JYJ.’; when I woke up in the morning, I felt that my whole life was about ‘JYJ’, which is why I changed it. The period, or full stop? Well, that really has no meaning behind it… haha.”
During his other interviews on the same day, Jaejoong openly confessed that he’s dated a total of four times. He also revealed a few complicated stories regarding his family, but emphasized that he wanted to focus on talking about ‘music’.
“I learned a lot after being given the role of executive director for a stage performance in Thailand. When I was given that role, I had a lot of worries. If it goes well, it’s thanks to the staff, if it turns out bad, it would’ve been my fault. I wanted to take full responsibility for everything. Before the concert began, I went early to carefully check everything from the arrangement to the stage timings. It was a relief that it finished well, but to be honest, it was thanks to the huge help of Junsu and Yoochun, haha.”
JYJ held their ‘World Tour 2011′ in Thailand last February and March at Bangkok’s Impact Arena for over 22,000 fans. With the help of other staff members, Jaejoong created of the lighting, traffic flow and outfits for the concert from scratch. He even used stop watches in order to directly check the perfect timing of how long they have backstage to get ready for their next stage.
“Since I am a singer, there are a lot of times when I think, ‘Ah, I wonder what it’d be like if we had something like this’. If I get to become the director more frequently, don’t you reckon I’ll soon be able to create an even more complete stage?”
Jaejoong also expressed, “The fans should’ve felt it too, but I think our music has changed very slightly. We never used to have a song like ‘Fallen Leaves’ before. It’s true that we were hesitant on whether we could pull off a song without a beat. We’re thinking of learning more about harmonics in order to keep pursuing change. After producing songs by ourselves, we felt the need to learn more about musical theory as our background.”
As time went on, the soju bottle began to empty, and Jaejoong’s words became more genuine than light-hearted. He began to express his inner thoughts on the situation with his former agency, colleagues, and the juniors who are changing, and talked about the wall that is slowly forming due to his sufferings and scars. Jaejoong consistently expressed that he wishes to participate in a variety of activities and promotions like the other members.
Jaejoong hoped that once the controversy with his former agency died down a bit, he would be able to meet his fans frequently via TV broadcast. However, his hopes have yet to be fulfilled. When asked if he was lonely, he laughed and answered, “Where and how can I meet with my fans? To be honest, most of my worries are based on just that. I believe that it’ll turn out ok. I’m planning to sing for the rest of my life, so it’s not like I can get tired of it, haha.”
11 April:
In his latest interview with IS Sports, JYJ’s Jaejoong clarified the various scandals and rumors surrounding him and other Japanese top stars.
On Ayumi Hamasaki, he revealed, “It is true that I’m friends with her. We first met at Avex’s annual ‘A-Nation‘ concert and kept in contact since then. However, we are not of the relationship that people seem to think.”
A scandal first broke out between the two last October due to Hamasaki attending JYJ’s showcase despite her busy schedule. “At the time, Ayumi attended the showcase with another Japanese singer friend. It should be regarded as the upkeep of friendship between musicians. She also announced marriage plans in January.”
On actress/model Yamada Yu, he revealed, “She’s one of my closest friends, alongside Yamashita Tomohisa. We met at an after-party in LA and became friends. Like everyone already knows, she’s in a relationship with Oguri Shun.”
Jaejoong concluded, “I don’t have a girlfriend so I spend most of my time at home. It was an opportunity for me to learn Japanese and meet with other Japanese celebrities and develop friendships.”
5 April:On March 23rd, JYJ’s Jaejoong visited the Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, where he prayed for the good health of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand.
The visit was made by chance, as Jaejoong had noticed a yellow bracelet that his fans were wearing during his stay in Thailand. It was only then that he learned that the king was lying in a sickbed, and that the yellow bracelets symbolized national unity, and more recently, the recovery of the king’s health.
After learning of his visit, reporters was asked Jaejoong for further details after JYJ’s concert on April 3rd.Jaejoong explained, “I wanted to repay the love our fans had given us by paying our respects to someone they love and respect as well. Although I wasn’t able to meet him in person, I hope that he recovers his health as soon as possible.”
His thoughtful action has been spotlighted in Thailand, and the star is being praised for acting as a cultural envoy, and not just a visiting singer.
According to a Thai tourism representative, Jaejoong’s visit is being regarded as that of a ’state guest’. Even if one wishes to visit the king, permission must first be granted from the royal family; Jaejoong was cordially welcomed.
Accepting the invitation, Jaejoong found that he lacked a proper suit since he was in Thailand for a concert. After learning of his predicament, the royal family went as far as to clear out one floor of an entire shopping mall so that he could shop in peace. On April 2nd, the royal family personally attended JYJ’s concert and expressed their gratitude for his visit.
Cautiously, Jaejoong stated, “I did what I had to do.”

On April 2nd and 3rd, JYJ’s Jaejoong made his debut as a director through the trio’s “JYJ World Tour Concert” in Bangkok, Thailand.
Not only did he direct the stage, but the sound and lighting systems as well. He even went as far as to head off to Thailand two weeks before the conert was to take place in order to immerse himself into the environment and finalize preparations.
Fellow member Junsu commented, “We began calling him ‘Director Kim.’ That’s how big his role was in the concert.”
In a separate interview with Sports Chosun, Jaejoong was asked to explain his thoughts on finally making his debut as a director. He replied, “I learned a lot through this experience. Based on the size alone, I’m not sure if it’s bigger than the concerts we held as rookies, but I did rehearse a lot.”
When asked how he became a director, “I’ve always had a lot of interest in directing. A lot of different directors have worked for our concerts, but there weren’t a lot that truly knew the feelings of a singer. It was my dream to create a concert that took both the singer and the director’s perspective into one.”
Jaejoong was also asked to name an important aspect of the concert, “Over 80% of the concert was prepared directly by the members themselves. We truly tried hard to create a concert that showed who we were through our world tour. It will definitely be a stage where the concentration is put on the songs.”
To conclude, Jaejoong revealed his feelings on the past eight months, “It was very difficult. If before, all we did was put up a spoon on top of an already set up dinner table, we had to create that dinner table this time. But I think that even if it gets more difficult from here on out, I won’t mind at all.”
1 April: Jaejoong had some thoughts to share about the group’s upcoming world tour.
He tweeted, “After rehearsal, I believe that it’ll be a performance that brings fans and JYJ together, and hearing the new single, I got goosebumps.”
Jaejoong also thanked the people around him: “Seeing the hardworking staff and dancers as well as my passionate members, I think the first world tour will be wonderful. Thanks everyone.”

20 Maret:On March 18th, Elle TV released their interview with JYJ’s Jaejoong, through which he discussed his tattoos, his current feelings, and future plans. The star had been collaborating closely with Elle TV for their unique photoshoot special, “Movie Still: Jaejoong“.
When asked by the reporter, “Is it true that you have a lot of tattoos?,” Jaejoong hesitated before answering,“Is that a bad thing? Honestly, there are a lot of negatives to getting tattoos, since it can affect the type of roles you can and can’t do with acting, but I’ve never once regretted getting my tattoos.”
He continued, “I’m merely engraving everything I hope to not forget, everything that consoles me, and everything I’m thankful for onto my body. The ‘Always Keep the Faith’ tattoo I have on the front represents my desire to protect my beliefs. The tattoos I have on my back, I don’t see often, but they’re there so that I can reflect on them when I do see them… I don’t think that I have tattoos on my body right now, so I’m curious as to how they’ll turn out in the pictures (laughter).”
Asked to describe his current feelings, he replied, “If before, I was maturing at the pace of one step a year, I’ve now jumped 10 steps. I’ve forgotten to be thankful for a while now, but I’m glad that I’ve remembered to be grateful. For now, I feel that I’m going through life where both hardship and happiness exists as one.”
On his future, Jaejoong replied, “I have received a lot of project offers, which I’m in positive discussion for. I’m spending my time by training and studying things like acting, English, and golf, in case my experience in them comes in useful later. I’ll also be spending a few weeks in the U.S. to discuss things on our future album release and our world tour.”
8 Maret: Jaejoong recently appeared on television in an advertisement “movie” for Elle at TV.
The short “movie” entitled, Movie Style: Jaejoong’s Part showed the singer as someone who seems perfect, but retracts into depression and sadness when he’s alone, which is when he becomes “Killer J.”
A member of the film crew stated, “Whether it’s because it’s been a while since he’s been active, Kim Jae Joong has returned with an incredibly mature feel and has played the role of ‘Solo Killer J’ to the point that you can get confused with his actual personality.”
Jaejoong himself stated, “With getting my heart ready for JYJ activities and the fact that the preparation flowed well with the calm concept of ‘Movie Style’, I’m looking forward to the end product.”
He added, “Though it’s not solid yet, we’re readying for an American album as well as a world tour.”
Movie Style: Jaejoong’s Part will air on the 18th at 11PM (KST) on Elle at TV.
