After focusing on his acting career, SS501‘s Kim Hyun Joong is more than ready to turn the focus back to singing. He’s been in high-drive lately, releasing back to back albums in the same year and delving into styles and concepts that most singers go through in double the time.
Why the rush? Kim Hyun Joong took the time to explain why, as well as some news on future releases through his interview with Segye Ilbo.
The singer stated, “First of all, I’m planning to release a ballad in December through a digital single with a unique music video to go with it. In January, I’m going to release another mini-album. Considering my schedule, I don’t have room to space them out. I’m also going on a tour next year to meet up with more of my fans so I’m trying to have some good songs under my belt before then. As for an official studio album, I think I prefer a mini-album with five or so songs.”
His recent “Lucky Guy” comeback was inspired by the movie ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘. He stated, “You can consider the album mainstream, but also modern. My concept is freedom. I remember seeing the movie Ocean’s Eleven and just thinking to myself, ‘That’s it.’ I set the physical concept first and then began to collect songs.”
He continued, “As for ‘Lucky Guy‘, it sounds like a song that would be performed with a band on stage, but I actually have a fun choreography to go with it. It’s a song that I made out of hope of creating something that’s considered band music, but also something that you can dance to. I made sure my outfits were also colorful to give that ‘dandy guy’ look.”
He’s already sold 110,000 album units so far, but that shouldn’t be a surprise considering he’s Kim Hyun joong.
“There’s a limit as to how far you can go as a dance singer. When I’m older, I’m sure I’ll be pursuing different genres, so when I have some time to myself, I want to sit down and try music that I’ve always wanted to pursue since I was younger. I actually love band music and play the bass myself. Still, I want to learn more instruments and create something all my own. At the beginning of SS501′s debut, I liked the thought of being a celebrity, but I think that’s inevitable as a young teen. Either way, I think it’s important to not be content with where you are now and to always work towards improving yourself.”
On the topic of dating, he said, “All of the girls I meet are strictly for business purposes so I don’t have anyone I’m dating. If I do have one, I guess pictures would be taken of us.”
Kim Hyun Joong will be making his comeback on Mnet‘s ‘M! Countdown‘ on October 20th.

▲Do you have any particular expectations for this album?
Kim Hyun Joong: “I just hope a lot of people listen and enjoy it. I’m interested in hearing what the public has to say about it, more than my actual fans. The sales for ‘Break Down‘ weren’t bad, but I wasn’t satisfied, which is why I focused a bit more on the music this time.”
▲You are only promoting your album for three short weeks. Is that enough time?
Kim Hyun Joong: “I wish I could promote it a while longer, but I have a performance that was scheduled prior and wanted to release the album before then. It’s too bad, but I’ll work hard during the time I have.”
▲Which song is your favorite?
Kim Hyun Joong: “Lucky Guy”. Why? Because it’s the title song (laughs). I want to have a good time performing this song on stage, because I couldn’t when I was performing “Break Down”.
▲Is it lonely performing as a soloist after being in a multi-member group?
Kim Hyun Joong: “Not at all. I want to focus on making a phenomenal album, and when it’s all said and done, I’ll put on a free concert for my fans.”
▲What do you mean, when it’s all said and done?
Kim Hyun Joong: “The career of a dance artist is short-lived. It’s not realistic for me to be in my mid-thirties and dance to 20 songs in a row on stage. I want to hold a final concert for my fans, while I’m still in my prime.”
▲Rain has just enlisted in the military, meaning that there is now a void in the ‘male solo-artist’ domain. Are you looking to become the next Rain?
Kim Hyun Joong: “Rain has accomplished so much during his career. It’s a little different for me though, because I debuted with a group. Although it may not be me, there will be a solo artist who will surpass Rain’s achievements.”
▲Don’t you think that K-Pop these days focuses too much on the music of idol stars?
Kim Hyun Joong: “I too was an idol star, but I don’t really have any particular thoughts about that. The music the idols are performing now might just be the music pushed by their agency. The stubborn ones will probably break out and produce a solo album to do the kind of music that’s right for them.”
▲Have any junior idols caught your attention?
Kim Hyun Joong: “Not sure, I didn’t really watch any music programs, except when I was promoting “Break Down”. I’m keeping a close eye on SNSD though, because I know they are making a comeback at a date similar to my own.”
▲Aren’t you a little intimidated to go head-to-head with the SNSD girls?
Kim Hyun Joong: “No, not really. I’m not trying to win against SNSD, I just think that the industry will be more lively with their comeback. There will be people who will listen to my music, despite SNSD releasing a new album.”
▲Any plans to go back into acting?
Kim Hyun Joong: “I think I could maybe in June of next year. Nothing specific has been decided yet, but looking at my schedule, I think that would be best. I played two gentle roles for the last two, so this time I want to play the rough, bad boy.”
▲What appeals more to you, acting or singing?
Kim Hyun Joong: “Both have their own appeals. With my music, I can show you what I’m about, but when you act, you live the life of another person. When I sing, I want to act, and when I act, I want to sing (laughs). It’s just hard to do both, is all. With singing, though, you get rated once a week on music programs so it definitely keeps you grounded.”
▲What are your plans for this album?
Kim Hyun Joong: “The media and the public shocked me by asking if I was really releasing another album already. I thought maybe I rushed myself, but it’s something I put a lot of effort into and I want to work hard until early next year. I thank my fans for always keeping up with me, and if you have $0.70 to spare, how about you download my new single, haha.”

The 2nd mini album starts off with “Do You Like That” and “Lucky Guy”, two tracks that carry a pop-meets-punk rock flavor. They are then followed by the softer songs, “I’m Your Man” and “U”.
Kim Hyun Joong stated, “The 1st mini album showed you the first glimpse of my image as a solo artist, and my capability in being able to ‘fill up’ the stage by myself without having all the members of SS501 there. The 2nd mini album will focus more on music in itself; as in it’s meant to be listened to, rather than being a background track for the visual components.”
He continued, “I didn’t dream of being a rocker, but I’ve always liked rock before joining SS501. I was in a school band during middle school, and played bass at church. I wanted to become a musician behind a cool rocker. I want to incorporate more rock genre music into future concepts.”
Although the promotion period for the 1st mini album was short, Kim Hyun Joong managed to sell 130,000 copies and the responses from international fans were also very positive.
He confessed, “It wasn’t easy promoting alone. There was a lot of work to do, from developing the album concept to finding songs, and it was exhausting. Before, I only had to do well on my parts, but as a solo artist, I had to calculate things like where it was hard for me to breathe while dancing; consequently, it was more difficult.”
Kim Hyun Joong continued, “But through the 1st solo promotions, I learned a lot of things such as how to control the tempo and speed.”
When asked what his goals for the new album were, Kim Hyun Joong stated, “I want this album to do better than the 1st mini album, and I want to hear that I’m the best as a solo artist out of all the SS501 members.”

SS501‘s Kim Hyun Joong revealed that he will be making a comeback as an actor at the end of next year.
Kim Hyun Joong held a press conference for the release of his 2nd mini-album, where he explained,“Since I released a new album only four months after my last album, there may be some people who feel that it came out too soon. However, I wanted to show off as much as I could during the Asia or perhaps world tour that I’ll hold next year, so that’s the reason I’m releasing my 2nd mini album.”
He continued, “In the beginning of November, there’ll be a new digital single, and in January of next year, I will release another album.”
Kim Hyun Joong also talked about his acting plans as well. “I don’t think I can be a singer and an actor at the same time… When I’m a singer, I want the fans to see me as a singer… The Asia tour will end next June, then right after that I’ll start acting. Later on in the year, I’ll come back to the fans through a drama.” He added, “If I rest for too long, I become lazy… I’m also slowly starting to think about doing movies as well.”
After his appearances in popular dramas like KBS‘s ‘Boys over Flowers‘ and MBC‘s ‘Playful Kiss‘, many are interested in Hyun Joong’s return as an actor.
“‘Breakdown’ was a very powerful track, whereas ‘Lucky Guy’ is more of an upbeat song that I will be able to enjoy with fans… The concept this time around was inspired by the movie ‘Ocean’s Eleven’.”
He continued, “This music video was shot with a gambler concept, but although the background and atmosphere make it seem like it’s in a casino, in reality, I’ll be playing Blue Marble.” (Blue Marble is a Korean board game similar to Monopoly)
With his last mini-album selling 110,000 copies, Kim Hyun Joong holds the record for the highest figure of album sales out of all the solo artists this year.
He joked, “Since the 1st mini album sold 110,000 units, I hope the 2nd mini album will sell 220,000 copies.”
Kim Hyun Joong will be hold his comeback stage on October 20th through Mnet’s ‘M! Countdown‘, and after three weeks of promotion, he will hold his first solo Japanese tour in November.

Kim Hyun Joong who transformed into a rough & rugged bad-boy with his first solo album ‘Break Down‘ has changed his concept to a ‘chic and dandy’ gentleman for his second album ‘Lucky’. Being released just 4 months after his first, ‘Lucky’ is already being highly anticipated by fans in Korea as well as the rest of Asia, and it is one that Kim Hyun Joong was once again very involved in. Kim Hyun Joong participated in composing and writing his own music, including “Do You Like That“, a punky rock & roll dance track that harmonizes the sounds of strong band instruments, as well as “Smile“, his first attempt at American medium R&B. “I’m Your Man” is a ballad track that combines the sounds of fifteen string instruments with the piano. On September 28th, Key East Entertainment updated Kim Hyun Joong’s official homepage with pre-order and tracklist info on his 2nd mini-album, “Lucky“.
“Lucky” was co-produced by Steven Lee (who’s worked with Kim Hyun Joong on his first mini-album) and Taewan a.k.a. C-Luv. Kim Hyun Joong will be promoting “Lucky Guy” as his title track.
Pre-orders for the album begin on September 29th through major record stores like Synnara, Yes24, Hottracks, and Interpark. The album will officially drop online and in stores on October 11th.

Hallyu star Kim Hyun Joong captured the hearts of 2,000 fans who awaited his arrival in Vietnam.
Kim Hyun Joong, who’s currently in the midst of promoting his album across all of Asia, flew into Vietnam at 10:30am on August 10th. 2,000 fans waited for his arrival at the airport and screamed havoc once he stepped off the plane.
In response, Kim Hyun Joong smiled and waved at the girls, and made his best effort to greet as many of them individually as possible. There were enough fans at the airport to block street traffic, and Kim Hyun Joong’s vehicle couldn’t leave the airport premises for quite some time. The news of his arrival spread quickly and the Vietnamese media couldn’t get enough of him.
The next day, he sat down to conduct formal interviews for Vietnamese newspapers, magazines, and TV programs. The media was extremely interested in him as he was asked in-depth questions about his current album, and the next steps he plans to take as an entertainer.
He then made his way to Vincom Plaza to visit The Face Shop for which he is the model for.
Kim Hyun Joong plans to visit most of Asia during the month of August, including Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong successfully completed his Japanese showcase on July 29th.
Over 1,800 fans and reporters from 200 different media outlets showed up for the promotional “Break Down“ event at JEPP Tokyo. Although Kim Hyun Joong performed in Japan before with SS501, it was his first time appearing as a soloist. “Even so, I’m not nervous,” he said as he smiled at the crowd.
After performing a total of seven songs, the 4D leader cracked up the audience as he confessed, “I want to sing more, but I don’t have any more songs to sing.”
Concluding the concert, he revealed, “In response to all of the Japanese fans who showed so much love for my solo album, I will be planning a nationwide tour in Japan.”

After debuting as a solo artist in June, he earned widespread attention, going on to sweep the music charts and music programs with “Break Down”.
Starting with a Japanese showcase at the Tokyo International Forum on July 29th, he’ll be meeting with an audience of 1,500, including fans and reporters, before moving on to Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and other locations in August.

The leader of SS501 and current solo artist Kim Hyun Joong has proved his mettle in Japan, having beat out both Lady Gaga and Beyonce to nab the number one spot on the Oricon weekly chart for foreign albums!
This achievement is especially surprising considering that Kim Hyun Joong has yet to officially release a formal Japanese album.
Following his ranking in first place, Lady Gaga placed second with “Born this Way” followed by Beyonce with “4“.

SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong has released a special remix album for Mnet’s “20’s Choice“!
Last year, he attended the awards ceremony as a presenter and made the promise to come back and stand on stage as a singer next year. Kim Hyun Joong is working towards keeping that promise, as he prepared a powerful performance for this year’s show.
He performed a remix version of his comeback track, “Break Down“, which was lengthened to last five minutes. Producers revealed beforehand, “Kim Hyun Joong worked on a special stage and choreography to satisfy the anticipation of his domestic and international fans. The remix features a stronger beat and a captivating performance that can’t be seen anywhere else.”
The remix album was released immediately for online purchase after the ceremony on July 7th through Mnet and other online music distribution websites.

It’s just been revealed that SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong will be releasing a limited edition version of his debut solo album, “Break Down“!
KeyEast Entertainment stated, “We are releasing a limited edition album as a gesture of thanks for those fans who’ve sent lots of love for Kim Hyun Joong’s first mini-album. The limited edition contains a variety of content, including a ‘making-of’ clip as well as personal stories from Kim Hyun Joong himself.”
The limited edition album is comprised of a CD and a making-of clip, a DVD containing the music videos for ‘Break Down’ and ‘Please‘, and 48 pages of never-before-seen photos.
The making-of film holds a special video message for fans as well as highlights from June 7th’s showcase. It also includes clips of Kim Hyun Joong’s dance practice and behind-the-scenes moments from the MV set.

Kim Hyun Joong’s first mini album “Break Down” has achieved sales of 100,000 albums just two weeks after its full release and making him the first solo artist to do so this year.
The “Kim Hyun Joong syndrome” is in full force at the moment. In a recent official album showcase at Seoul Junggu Janchung Gymnasium, 4,000 fans came to flare his full-fledged solo activities, while his title song “Break Down” quickly became a sensation on the music programs.
On the 22nd, music album sales tracking site, Hanteo Chart, reported that almost 2 weeks after the release, sales for his album rose by 80,000. Adding to the already 20,000+ copies already sold, he has broken the threshold of 100,000 albums sold.
A little over a decade ago, before the advent of digital internet media, 1 million album sales were readily available but album sales are not easy to raise in the current music situation. Additionally, solo artist releases are a bit more difficult in this current idol group market craze.
With this in mind, this makes Kim Hyun Joong’s efforts significant and keeps him in company of other idol groups such as TVXQ and Big Bang.
One music official stated, “The burden of Kim Hyun Joong’s solo comeback has paid off as he has a positive impact on the music industry and inspired the music industry to become alive again.”
In August, Kim Hyun Joong plans to start his Asia tour in 9 different locations.

SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong is being praised as hero for quickly spotting a fan who fainted during the middle of his live showcase.
The showcase was held to celebrate the release of his solo mini-album, “Break Down“, and fans were overjoyed to see that fellow SS501 members Kim Kyu Jong and Heo Young Saeng made a surprise appearance, taking part in a talk session with Kim Hyun Joong.That talk session was abruptly interrupted after Kim Hyun Joong suddenly cried out (at 2:23), “Did she collapse?“, while rising from his seat in shock.
Kim Hyun Joong called security for assistance, and the young lady was taken to a local hospital.
KeyEast Entertainment stated, “During the showcase, a fan fainted with mild symptoms of exhaustion. Quick emergency measures were carried out, and she was taken home safely after treatment.”

Kim Hyun Joong has returned as a solo artist and gave a word of thanks to his fans with tears pouring from his eyes.
On June 7th, after his mini-album “Break Down” release showcase was over, he read a letter that he wrote from his heart to his fans.
He pulled out a letter and revealed his heartfelt feelings, “I’ve always been able to show my outer-self on stage, but I’ve never been able to show my heart to them. But I’ve finally gained enough courage to write this letter to share my feelings with my fans”.
Kim Hyun Joong read, “It’s already been 6 years since I’ve met every one. I thank you for believing in me and cheering for me all this time and never changing,” and he confessed, “I started looking back while I was working on the album. I realized how important the meaning of ‘together’ is”.
He continued, “I started feeling pressure and fear as I was trying to do this alone. It was hard to defeat this… I looked back over the past year, fans fighting and misunderstandings, only being able to watch over the situation made me think to myself, ‘I guess I have limits, too,” as his eyes started tearing.
He ended by saying, “I worked hard on the album by imagining how happy the fans would be looking at it. I hope that you will all be smiling and be even happier in the future.”
He added, “This album is not mine, but belongs to everyone. I’m very thankful to everyone that showed up here, and I want to tell everyone with my heart that I love you”.

After teasing fans with a full music video for “Please” earlier this month, SS501’s Kim Hyun Joonghas finally made his long-awaited solo debut by dropping the music video for his title track, “Break Down“!
The song was composed by Steven Lee and is classified as a ’south urban dance track’.
Right from its beginning phases, the song was composed with a dynamic choreography in mind to ensure a strong performance.
“Break Down” combines powerful electric brass and synth sounds to create an energetic track. The album also passed through the hands of prestigious sound engineer, Ken Louis (Eminem, Kanye West, and Usher), who personally engineered it himself in New Jersey for a perfect sound quality.

His mini-album contains a total of six tracks, including an intro titled “Let Me Go“, and of course, his R&B dance track,”Please”. The title track, “Break Down”, is also the work of Ken Lewis, who has experience working with Eminem, Kanye West, and Usher. Last week, SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong officially kicked off his comeback preparations with the surprise teaser release for “Please“from his debut solo album, “Break Down“. He’s finally unleashed the full MV for “Please”, and it was definitely worth the wait!
Scenes were recorded at an indoor set on May 16th, and the entire production was overseen by director Jo Soo Hyun, who’s known working with TVXQ, Big Bang, and SNSD. Kim Hyun Joong was joined by actress Kim Min Seo as his special love interest.
KeyEast stated, “Before the release of the mini-album’s title track, ‘Break Down’, we have decided to release ‘Please.’ This music video is the work of some of the top staff in Korea, and we are sure fans are looking forward to seeing his new image.”

While preparing for his highly-anticipated comeback, SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong gave his patient fans a treat by unveiling some BTS photos from his practice room.
The photos are from his rehearsal for his “Break Down” stage, and fans on various community boards left enthusiastic messages of support for the star.
KeyEast commented, “Kim is literally counting down the days until he’s able to meet with his fans on stage, and is focused entirely on his singing and choreography practice. He’s determined to do his best until the very end so that the album can be considered a present to all those who have waited.”

Starting on May 20th, SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong will be opening pre-orders for his debut mini-album all across Asia through Hot Tracks, Yes24, Interpark, Aladdin, and other online music sites.
KeyEast Entertainment stated, “Kim Hyun Joong personally participated in the overall production of the mini-album, so it’s especially important to him. Since it is his first solo album, it will feature tracks that embody who he is as a person.”

10 Mei:Kim Hyun Joong, who recently opened fanclub membership for his new solo fanclub, “Henecia“, reported that his official homepage was recently hacked. Cyber investigations have begun, and KeyEast has asked fans to refrain from submitting membership applications for the time being.
The hacker changed the notification post so that fans were now required to pay a $35 USD membership fee, and even went as far as to change the bank accounts associated with it.
Another false post was made, informing fans that they would receive a special fan-meet opportunity with the star in Jeju Island for an extra fee of $100 USD. An additional $800 USD fee was asked for those wanting a 1:1 dinner meal opportunity.
Representatives of KeyEast stated, “The official homepage was recently hacked. We would like to inform fans that the account listed in the notification is not KeyEast’s account, and that the Jeju Island fan-meeting is also false and has nothing to do with KeyEast. We will be halting all membership applications for Henecia for the time being.”
They continued, “The case has been turned over to cyber investigations. We would like to apologize for raising concerns.”

KeyEast Entertainment opened a fanclub naming contest for fans to submit their suggestions to. Over 500 names were submitted, and fans were asked to vote for a final three. Kim Hyun Joong then chose his favorite out of the three and revealed that it was “Henecia”, a combination of the letter ‘H’ from his name, and the Latin term ‘benecia‘, which means ‘blessed’.
Through his official homepage, KeyEast wrote, “We will now be taking members for ‘Henecia’, the new fanclub that’ll promote alongside Kim Hyun Joong’s solo album.”
The fanclub was created under Kim Hyun Joong’s hopes of communicating more directly with his fans during his upcoming solo debut. Membership is open to not only Korean fans, but international fans as well, and various benefits will be handed out.

3 Mei:On May 1st, SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong joined about 150 people in a Seoul city marathon competition at the Han River Park in support of children affected by cancer.
This was the 8th marathon co-hosted by the Running Doctors of Korea corporation and the Korean Marathon Association.
At the event, Kim Hyun Joong helped out in the ceremonial handover by presenting $23,000 USD in donations collected by employees of an anonymous company to the two organizations.asdf
The proceeds from this competition will go to the aid of children suffering from cancer.

On March 24th, a representative from KeyEast Entertainment spoke through OSEN and revealed, “Kim Hyun Joong has been living in the recording room and is busily recording his newest tracks. Since it is his first solo album apart from his group, he’s filled with both determination and effort.”
