Kang Ho Dong

11 April:
Kang Ho Dong was spotted placing his National Assembly Elections vote in Seoul on April 11th.

Wearing a comfortable outfit, he politely greeted the manager at the premises with a smile, as well as bowing 90-degrees to greet the citizens that recognized him.
Kang Ho Dong recently made the decision to donate the holdings and shares from his franchise restaurant ’678′ to society.
The entertainer, who is currently taking a break from the entertainment industry, attended Woo Seung Min‘s wedding on April 8th and revealed that no final decisions have been made regarding his comeback.

20 Mar:
Comedian Kang Ho Dong, who retired from the entertainment business, is getting into the chicken business.

On March 22nd, an investors meeting will be held for his franchise, ‘Kang Ho Dong Chicken 678‘ and the plans include to open 7 chain restaurants in Seoul.
At this investors meeting, their business model will be explained to show how they differentiate from their competitors and how with little capital, potential investors may be able to gain financial success.
‘Kang Ho Dong Chicken 678′ will set themselves apart from other chicken brands by offering such menu items as, Strong Man’s Chili Chicken, Crackling Chicken, Honey Glazed Chicken, and Spicy Chicken that will Cause Tears.  They will only use certified Korean chicken meat and claim that their chicken will be more tender than all the competitors.
There are also plans to place franchises overseas in such places as New York and Beijing.  The store located in Shinchon will personally be managed by actor comedian Park Sang Myun.
In 2003, Kang Ho Dong opened a meat restaurant called ‘678‘ which has been recording great sales, so people are keeping an eye on how his chicken business will fare.
As a person who personally loves Korean style fried chicken and also visited the restaurant ’678′ I think that Kang Ho Dong has another sure fire hit on his hands.  Now only if he will come back to the small screen for his loyal fans!

21 Feb:

MC Kang Ho Dong (42) is rumored to be making a comeback soon through SBS TV‘s ‘Strong Heart‘.
According to Newsis, a broadcasting representative remarked on February 21st, “Recently the ‘Strong Heart’ staff and Kang Ho Dong began discussing the right time for his comeback. Kang Ho Dong is reportedly considering the staff’s comeback request quite optimistically.”
As of now, singer Lee Seung Gi is leading ‘Strong Heart’ alone after Kang Ho Dong’s departure, but according to the representative, Seung Gi will most likely leave ‘Strong Heart’ due to scheduling conflicts with his new MBC TV drama, ‘King2Heart‘.
Lee Seung Gi will most likely film his last episode of the show around mid-March and if Kang Ho Dong agrees to comeback, he will be filming his first shoot before March comes to an end.
Kang Ho Dong was involved in a tax evasion controversy this past September and decided to temporarily retire from the industry to reflect on his actions.
He has been acquitted of the charges, but he has yet to speak in public.

12 January:

Cutting off contact with his friends and the lack of communication from Kang Ho Dong after temporarily retiring and being acquitted from his tax scandal, many have been worrying about his current condition.
On January 12th, however, it was revealed that Kang Ho Dong surprisingly responded to former ‘1 Night 2 Days‘ colleague, Uhm Tae Woong and his new years text message.
Uhm Tae Woong wrote, “Hyungnim have a Happy New Year” and received a reply with the words, “You too, have a happy new year. Thank you for the greeting. I hope only good things happen for you”.
Kang Ho Dong also sent Lee Soo Geun a text message, after the end of the year awards, saying “Don’t be exhausted or tired. I was happy to (work and) be with you”.
Upon hearing this news netizens commented, “Now it’s really time for him to come back”, and “I really miss him on 1 Night 2 Days”.
Friends and fans are anxiously hoping for Kang Ho Dong’s return in 2012.

28 December:
After the cast of ‘1N2D (1 Night 2 Days)‘ won the Entertainment ‘Daesang’ from KBS, they immediately called MC Kang Ho Dong to share the good news. The members tried calling several times, but Kang Ho Dong didn’t pick up.

In the end, Lee Soo Geun texted the MC on everyone’s behalf.
According to an insider close to Lee Soo Geun, Lee Soo Geun wrote, “We have been honored with the ‘Daesang’, thanks to you hyung. We want to share the glory with you,” among other things.
To the text messages, however, Kang Ho Dong replied right away writing back, “Do not ever grow weary or tired. I am glad to be able to share the honor with you.”
Even after the members were awarded the trophy, Lee Soo Geun remarked, “Big hyung, we will come visit you with this award,” giving the glory to their eldest member.
According to those close to MC Kang Ho Dong, the reason why he did not answer their calls was because he wanted the team to have all the glory. He watched the KBS Entertainment Awards on TV, and definitely wanted to be there with them. “He mostly stays at home, as far as we know. He has been unable to completely sort through his thoughts and his emotions, therefore cannot bring himself to answer calls from even his 1N2D members who are like blood brothers to him,” they said.
Meanwhile, ’1N2D’ is a variety program that began in 2007, and continues to receive high ratings to this day. The cast members of ’1N2D’ travel the nation to introduce the Korea’s most beautiful vacation spots as well as the best eats to the viewers, but is unfortunately coming to an end.
The last episode airs next February.

16 December:
After dominating headlines for months, Kang Ho Dong‘s controversy has finally come to an end. The court has announced that they will be dismissing his case due to an absence of an arraignment, or a formal declaration of charges.

Earlier in September, Kang Ho Dong was investigated for tax evasion. He was initially laid with a finedue to a discrepancy in his numbers, but it seems that there were no formal charges or processes made against the multi-entertainer.
On December 17th, the Seoul District Prosecutor Office announced, “In the case of the fine being less than $500,000 USD (per year), the National Tax Service must file a charge of tax evasion in order for the subject to be a suspect of tax evasion. However, there has been no such charge up until now, so we have decided to drop the case as of the 16th.”
Kang Ho Dong’s fine amounts to $700,000 USD for a combined three years, significantly less than the required $500,000 USD per year. The National Tax Service added, “Kang Ho Dong’s annual fine is less than the required $500,000 USD. Furthermore, he did not commit acts of intentional evasion. It is merely a mistake made on behalf of his accountant, so we will not be charging him with tax evasion.”
Due to the controversy surrounding his name at the time, Kang Ho Dong decided to temporarily retire from the industry. With this latest development however, it seems that he can finally relax after a long battle against suspicions and rumors.

1 Desember:

Rumors of Kang Ho Dong being involved with the Japanese Yakuza have recently surfaced, and his acquaintances have expressed their frustration.
On December 1st, a general service TV channel reported through a news program that 23 years ago, Kang Ho Dong attended a meeting that allegedly took place between Yakuza and Korean gang members, and shared a video clip of the meeting taking place.
A source close to the former MC informed Newsen through a phone interview, “23 years ago, Kang Ho Dong was only a high school student. He attended a wrestling match in Japan and was simply called out by the event managers. He was just a student at the time and there was no way he could disobey his elder authorities, and plus what would a high school student even begin to know about the Yakuza?”
Kang Ho Dong is having a difficult time after temporarily resigning from the industry. It’s a shame that these kinds of rumors are even circling“, the source continued.

13 September:

Fans and netizens have created a protest form against Kang Ho Dong leaving the entertainment industry. The online petition started with the goal of at least 10,000 signatures, and has received almost 9000 in 6 days.
The petition was created on September 9th on popular online portal Daum with the title, “Petition against Kang Ho Dong’s retirement.” The message went on to say, “It’s too much to call it tax evasion…”
“Because of stylist fees and cost of staff meals, they’re calling it tax evasion, but these are the reasons for the extra money. I don’t believe it’s because he omitted information about his total salary that he’s being accused for tax evasion.”
“It’s not as if Kang Ho Dong acted against the law, the breakdown given by the licensed tax accountant was a little off, the fact that he’s about to retire is an injustice.”

September:

Kang Ho Dong, who was recently involved in a tax evasion controversy, has announced that he will temporary retire from the entertainment industry.
On September 9th, an emergency press conference was called at the Seoul Garden Hotel, where Kang Ho Dong stated, “I’m sorry for causing the public to worry. From this moment, I will temporary retire from the entertainment industry.”
Shedding tears, he continued, “I would like to sincerely apologize to the public for the recent tax scandal.” He then stood up and bowed deeply to the audience.
Kang Ho Dong stated, “I wrestled when I was young. When I was a professional wrestler, I even received the “man of great strength” title with the public’s support. After becoming an entertainer, I landed MC positions on many programs thanks to the high level of interest the public had in me. Without your love, I know that the Kang Ho Dong today would not exist. Knowing this, I have let down and disappointed you.”
“The tax problem is my fault for not thoroughly managing myself. I’m quite aware that the public’s hate for me right now is great. I’m a person who has a job as an entertainer. My duty is to give viewers laughter and happiness through the TV. In a situation like this, how can I shamelessly laugh and talk on TV?”
Kang Ho Dong continued, “From this moment on, I will be temporarily retiring from the entertainment business.”
“I will be taking this conference as an opportunity to tell my viewers that I will be tentatively retiring from the industry. I will discuss with the producers of the programs I am a part of to negotiate my leave without any losses suffered on their part.”
After I retire, I will be reflecting on my actions and looking back on whether I was too assured of my high fame. I would like to apologize once again for causing a disturbance to society.”
Meanwhile, the Korean Taxpayers Union submitted a bill of indictment, accusing the National Tax Service for releasing personal information to the public. The Korean Taxpayers Union stated, “We have decided to report the National Tax Service for violating the ‘Personal Information Protection Law’ by releasing the information of a popular celebrity to the public.”
Stay tuned for more on this breaking development.

8 September:

Kang Ho Dong‘s associate has stepped up to dismiss rumors speculating that his yearly income was $30 million USD. The rumors first came about when news of his tax evasion came to light, causing an angered citizen to file a lawsuit against the MC for dodging taxes when he made $30 million USD a year.
One broadcasting representative explained, “Logically, it makes no sense that Kang Ho Dong would make $30 million USD a year. Let’s say he makes $10,000 USD per episode from the four programs he stars in on the three broadcasting channels – that only amounts to $2 million USD for 52 weeks. Even including his various advertisement income and events, you can’t make $30 million like that. That rumor is completely unfounded.”
He continued, “Kang Ho Dong also doesn’t perform at night events or cable programs — he only stars in three or four programs. Where are people even getting these numbers? Kang Ho Dong and other celebrities get their taxes done by a tax accountant. Logically speaking, how much do you think these celebrities would know about the tax system? They have everything done by an accountant. There isn’t even an exact figure on the amount that Kang Ho Dong specifically owes yet.”
Another close industry representative of Kang Ho Dong added, “He has nothing to earn out of recapitalizing. He was met with a loss for a very long time, and a lot of people know how much he suffered because of that.”
Kang Ho Dong’s agency had also previously explained, “There was a slight misunderstanding by the accountant that handles Kang Ho Dong’s taxes. He did not purposely avoid paying his taxes. We acknowledge his mistake and promise that this will never happen again.”

5 September:

On September 5th, representatives of Kang Ho Dong revealed that he was investigated for tax evasion, and was eventually charged a fine.
Through an official press release, representatives stated, “We’d like to first apologize to the fans for concerning them with such unfortunate news. During his recent investigation by the National Tax Service, it’s been discovered that he was charged additional fees of a couple hundred million won.  For the past five months, he’s been working with his lawyer for all of the necessary steps required by the National Tax Service and genuinely did all he could for the investigation.”
They continued, “What was found in his declaration was that he did not pay enough taxes, which was why he was charged additional fees.  Kang Ho Dong will make the appropriate payments immediately. Whatever the reason, we would like to apologize to his fans and the citizens of Korea for concerning them with this issue.”
Concluding, they added, “We would also like to promise that Kang Ho Dong will abide by the law, since it’s his duty as a citizen of this nation.  We bow our head in apology once more.”

12 August:
After rumors of ‘National MC’ Kang Ho Dong leaving KBS 2TV’s ‘1 Night 2 Days’‘ arose, there’s a new rumor floating around now that he received an offer of approximately $10 million USD to leave KBS and transfer over to SBS.

An associate in the entertainment industry revealed, “Kang Ho Dong is in the middle of establishing a one-man agency and is thinking of making a show where he will both produce and star in.” The associate added, “We heard that SBS have arranged a show where Kang Ho Dong will be afforded both of these luxuries and even offered him $10 million USD“.
According to senior officials, Kang Ho Dong, the MC on the leading variety show, “1 Night 2 Days“, which is currently enjoying the best ratings out of all the shows on the 3 major broadcasting stations, is well worth the $10 million USD.
The variety show is also pulling in the highest earnings mainly due to Kang Ho Dong’s witty jokes, slapstick comedy, and determination to go all out with his body. Because of this, KBS is selling out all their advertisements at a premium price.
According to an associate of the Korea Broadcasting Advertising Corporation, ‘1 Night 2 Days’ advertisement earnings are around $700,000 USD per episode. If you add the replays, the earnings can easily exceed $1 million USD. On top of that, the show is a certified ratings maker and if you calculate the earnings and his potential pay the show will earn around $4.5 million USD, making the rumors on Kang Ho Dong’s offer of $10 million somewhat believable.
However, an associate of SBS commented, “Even with high ratings and assurance in advertisement earnings, offering one person $10 million is a bit too much“, and added, “It’s true that everyone is trying to recruit Kang Ho Dong after he announced that he was leaving “1 night 2 days”, but I’m not quite sure about the rumors of the $10 million USD proposal“.

On August 12th, MC Kang Ho Dong addressed the recent rumors surrounding his exit from KBS’s ‘1 Night 2 Days’ while arriving on set for his latest scheduled recording with the program.
He began by saying to the large number of media personnel gathered, “It seems that the recording for today will be a viewer tour camp. I will focus on the recording and do my absolute best.”
Regarding the rumors, he replied, “I am currently in many sincere discussions with the producers. As they’ve previously said, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. We’re still in the middle of discussions, but I promise to reveal the decision to everyone once results are made and confirmed.”
The recording taken place on this day will be a continuation of the show’s ongoing project, where they bring in viewers of all ages (from 1 to 100) to join the members on the show.

21 July:
‘National MC’ Kang Ho Dong recently finished his contract with Stom E&F, and it seems he’ll be following in the footsteps of other MCs by establishing his own one-man label.

Although a final decision hasn’t been made yet, industry representatives revealed that he’s considering his own label now that his contract is over.
One representative said, “He’s receiving a lot of love calls from big labels in the industry, but I believe he’s decided to set up a one-man company with a friend he’s known and worked with for the past 20 years.”
Kang Ho Dong is currently working with all three broadcast networks – SBS, MBC, KBS – in addition to having various CF and business ventures, so setting up a one-man label isn’t too out of the question.
Other prominent stars who have opted for this path in recent memory include Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Kyung Kyu, Park Myung Soo, and Noh Hong Chul.
