23 April:
Korea’s 2011 box office hit “My Black Mini Dress” will be making its way to the CGV Cinemas in Los Angeles on  April 22nd. Yesterday, I got a chance to view the pre-screening of the film in order to present you all with this movie review.

“My Black Mini Dress” revolves around the story of four friends who are all 24-year-old recent college graduates. Yoo Min (Yoon Eun Hye) is a hopeful writer who lands a job at the bottom rung of a broadcasting company. Min Hee (Yoo In Na) dreams of becoming a fashion designer but ends up in a basic English language class amongst high schoolers in order to pass her TOEFL exam. Then there are Soo Jin(Cha Ye Ryun) and Hye Ji (Park Han Byul). While Soo Jin is struggling to make her acting debut, failing countless auditions, Hye Ji randomly gets scouted and achieved instant fame, but struggles to get acknowledged by her peers in the industry. The four girls’ close friendship is tested as they face the harsh realities of life.
While the core cast of the movie  is star-studded on its own, this film also has an all-star supporting lineup, including Chun Soo Kyung, Lee Yong Woo, Choi Yoon Young, and U-KISS’s Dongho. It also features short cameos by actors Lee Chun Hee and Kim Kwang Gyu. For all the Kiss Me’s out there, Dongho stars as a high school student in Min Hee’s English class. Although there aren’t many, most of Dongho’s lines are in English.

“My Black Mini Dress” is cross between two popular American chick flicks, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “Sex and the City“, as all three films revolve around the friendship of four unique girls. While “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” is about teens in high school and “Sex and the City” is about women in their late 30s/early 40s, “My Black  Mini Dress” is situated right in between with girls in their post-college mid 20s. The hardships that the girls of “My Black Mini Dress” have to face are very similar to those that occur in the aforementioned American films as well; parental divorce, men, sex, pregnancy scares, jealousy, death, and most importantly holding tight to their friendship amidst the trials and tribulations.
“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”, “Sex and the City”, and “My Black Mini Dress” all seem to follow the same ultimate chick flick formula: four unique characters each with their own style, who are the best of friends, a story of their individual battles in life, and the special support system that they have. Therefore, if you liked any of the prior mentioned movies, or if you are fan of chick flicks in general, I recommend this film.

NOTE: Unfortunately, “My Black Mini Dress” will not be shown with English subtitles.

The unique fashion points for each of the four leading ladies on “My Black Mini Dress” have been revealed!
Since the movie focuses not only on the love stories of women in their 20s, but on their styles and passion for fashion as well, the topic of their fashion styles has been a hot one ever since the movie unveiled its concept.
The fashion director for this movie is Kim Sung Il, who prevoiusly worked with Kim Sa Rang in “Secret Garden“, in addition to Lee Mi Sook and Kim Min Hee for “Actresses.”
Beginning with Yoon Eun Hye’s style, Kim revealed, “Her style is very natural, but has lots of variety. I used a lot of colorful items that were mixed and matched to convey a certain style.”
Regarding Park Han Byul, Kim stated, “I emphasized a sexy feel for her through vivid colors and oversized items. In order to tone down the excessive feel of all of her fashion items, I made sure to keep other aspects of her style simple.”
For Yoo In Na, Kim revealed, “With a lovely and romantic concept as its base, I paid special attention to little details like her accessories to give the feel of a very ‘Minhee-like’ style when they were put together.”
Concluding with Cha Ye Ryun, Kim stated, “I worked to bring out her boyish charms with the use of clean shirts and knit tops. In order to keep the overall look feminine, I made sure that the pieces were slim fitting.”

6 Maret:
With “My Black Mini Dress” boasting four of Korea’s most chic actresses (Yoon Eun Hye, Park Han Byul, Yoo In Na, Cha Ye Ryun) in its leading roles, sponsors are lining up to provide top quality products to live up to the ladies’ roles as luxurious big spenders.
A representative of the producers revealed, “We can’t reveal the exact amount, but the costs that have gone into the outfits alone amount to 30% of the total production expenses. The outfits that are worn amongst the four of them also total to $300,000 USD.”
The wardrobe costs for “My Black Mini Dress” triples that of the average Korean movie, and because most of the outfits were specifically crafted for the four ladies, the expected cost is speculated to be greater than what was revealed.

The girls will be wearing brands like KUHO, Jean-Luc Amsler, Tory Burch, Levi’s, and many others.
Most of the scenes also take place in Kangnam, Seoul, in addition to the high-end locations of Chungdam-dong and Apgujung-dong. Producers were able to rent the ‘Tony Burch’ store in its entirety as well.
The movie will hit theaters on March 24th.

28 Februari:
On the morning of February 28th, the four gorgeous ladies of “My Black Mini Dress” gathered for a press conference at the Apgujung CGV.
For those of you who may have been out of the loop, “My Black Mini Dress” is a film which stars Yoon Eun Hye, Park Han Byul, Yoo In Na, and Cha Ye Ryun as women in their mid-20s who hold deep friendships and a mutual love for the classic black mini dress.
During the press conference, Yoon Eun Hye elaborated on why the role appealed to her. “Director Heo In Moo offered me the role of a normal, everyday girl who seems to be lacking 2% in everything she does. I felt that the audience would be able to connect with her, and decided to participate in the film.”
She continued, “I think there’s a perfect time for everything, and this movie feels right for my age. It’s going to be a lot of fun watching it again and reliving the memories when I’m in my 30s or 40s.”
When asked about her feelings on making the shift from dramas to movies for the first time, she responded, “It’s true that I was afraid of getting hurt. I lack a lot of things as a person, and I didn’t want to jump into it unprepared.”
Meanwhile, Park Han Byul will be playing the role of a successful star named ‘Hyeji’, who was first discovered while clubbing at a party. Not only does she possess perfect looks, but she also has a cool personality and a wealthy background to boot.
Considering how her character is also a celebrity, reporters asked Park if she felt any similarities between her character’s personality and her own. Park Han Byul replied, “My character becomes a celebrity, while I am a celebrity, so I felt a lot of connection to her when she worried over things like friendships.”
She continued, “I’ve been acting ever since I was little, so I always felt a distance between me and my friends. My character goes through all of that, so I felt connected to her. I think those people who are in their 20s and are studying acting will feel a personal connection to her as well.”
Meanwhile, Yoo In Na was asked the same question about whether she felt there were parallels between her character’s life and her own. Since she plays a college student, Yoo In Na replied, “When I was a college student, I was a trainee so I thought I’d still be a trainee even after I debuted. I was filled with pressure and nervousness about what to do after graduating.”
She continued, “During my long training, I did a lot of work involving various chores. Whenever I saw my friends debut before me and receive impressive spotlights and big paychecks, I felt like there was a barrier placed between me and my reality. In the movie, my character feels a sort of bitterness when she sees ‘Hyeji’ (Park Han Byul) succeed and live an impressive life.. which I think a lot of women would connect with.”
“I also received a special award at a smartphone film festival for a scenario I wrote. I think working with ‘My Black Mini Dress’ while writing its script helped a lot. I was able to feel a variety of different feelings directors go through. When I wanted something done this way, but the actors or actresses portrayed it in a different way. The experience, as an actress, helped me realize that I just needed to pour in my concentration with everything I had.”
Finally, Cha Ye Ryun will be playing the role of the wealthiest friend with a hidden pain which she’s yet to share.
When asked what she thought was most important to a woman in her 20s, she replied, “A man.“ The other three actresses chose ‘competence’ and reasoned, “If you’re competent, won’t the men be chasing after you?”
Cha Ye Ryun reasoned, “I think it’s a man. The man can just have all of the looks, competence, and wealth.”
The movie will be released on March 24th.
