Win Win

13 December:
The topic of IU‘s decision to forego university has drawn some attention again, thanks to IU’s recent recording on KBS’s ‘Win Win‘.

IU explained, “Honestly, the reason I gave up on going to university was because I thought I wouldn’t know any of the answers on the entrance exam. After debuting in high school, my grades dropped a lot.”
She went on, “I barely graduated high school so I thought ‘Could I graduate college?’. I gave up when I realized that college is a place where you have to study harder.”
“Of course, my parents were against my decision. But [I explained that] while my friends are going to college, I’m studying [vocal training] and composing really hard, so I promised them that I’ll become an amazing person [in my own way].”
This episode of ‘Win Win’ will be broadcast on December 13th at 11:15 PM KST.

Last weekIU revealed that she would be speaking frankly about her family and her past for the first time through KBS‘s ‘Win Win‘.
On December 13th, IU finally shared some stories about her past, which was impacted by poverty. According to producers, IU said, “When I was younger, I had no choice but to live separately from my parents because we were so impoverished. I lived with my grandmother, a cousin, and my younger brother for a year and a half in a studio room.”
She continued, “The room was always cold and there was never enough food to eat. We were barely able to live by on money my grandmother made from selling small hair accessories at the market. I rarely met with or spoke to my parents and consoled myself whenever I felt lonely that I still had my grandmother.”
Because of the poor conditions of her home, IU confessed that she liked spending time at the rehearsal room than her own home. “Instead of my lonely and cold home, I liked my rehearsal studio better. More than anything, I was glad to be able to eat as much as I could and sleep in a warm bed at night.”
A year before her debut, IU revealed that she had been dropped from 20 different auditions and had even been involved in fraud.
The full episode airs at 11:15 p.m. KST on December 13th.

29 June:
On the June 28th episode of KBS 2TV’s ‘Win Win‘, singer Kim Bum Soo shared details from his rebellious adolescence. The singer compared his past to his current state, having recently risen to a new level of popularity after taking part in MBC’s ‘I Am A Singer‘.

One of the discussion topics on the show concerned rumors that Kim Bum Soo was a notorious fighter when he was in school. Kim responded to this rumor, “That’s a little misleading. It’s true that I fought often, but that doesn’t mean I won them all,” and jokingly added that in reality he was a cheap fighter.

Delving into his rough past, the singer explained that after his father’s business failed, his entire family moved into a small basement room. Kim Bum Soo said, “I just went around getting into fights all the time.” He added jokingly, “I think my extreme cheekbones and pointy eyes formed as a result of my rebellion.”
He continued, “I’m not the type to pick a fight if I’m left alone. It was only when someone would look at me the wrong way or touch me that I would get angry. I think I used fights as a defense mechanism because I had so many insecurities about not being as good as other people.”
Throughout his troublesome youth, the singer admitted to having frequented police stations. While describing his dramatic about-face in life, Kim Bum Soo revealed, “I quit smoking and drinking and changed my entire life after I contracted pleurisy (an inflammation of the lungs that causes sharp chest pains) my senior year of high school.”
