Girl group 4minute revealed that they will work harder to find their own unique colors in the coming new year.

At a recent press conference that was held at Lotte Hotel on December 26th, 4minute stated, “In the new year, rather than focusing on appeasing and appealing to the general public, we want to try music that’s both fresh and original. It’s important to strive to be the best, however, we want to focus on establishing our own unique personality and expressing our own colors.”
The 4minute girls along with their Cube Entertainment label mates B2STG.NA, and more put on a world-tour concert this year, covering major cities such as London, Brazil (São Paulo), Tokyo, and more.
We performed on a lot of stages overseas this year,” they continued. “Although 4minute’s music seems to appeal to the masses, we think it’s more Pop than K-pop. I think because of that, our music appeals to fans in places like England and Brazil. We want to thank our fans in Japan that came out to see us as well, and we will work harder to show you better performances from here on out.”
Member HyunA who had a successful year with her single “Bubble Pop” jokingly remarked, “It was so hard to deal with the success.

20 Mei

4minute recently opened up about their relationship with sibling group B2ST.

As B2ST were making their comeback on KBS’s “Music Bank“, 4minute was approached about their labelmates. The girls confessed, “We treat each other like brothers and sisters.”
During a recent interview, 4minute said, “As B2ST is getting more popular, their female fans seem to be worried that they will get into scandals with other girl groups. However, the problem is that even B2ST’s fans don’t see us as a girl group, but rather as B2ST’s sibling group. We were shocked to hear their fans say, ‘If you are going to get in a scandal, get in one with the 4minute unnis’.
Both 4minute and B2ST are groups under Cube Entertainment, and fans have known about their close relationship since their respective debuts.
4minute continued, “B2ST’s fans even take us easy. Our fans even pressured that if we are to have joint stages for year-end festivals, that we don’t do them with any other team besides B2ST.
Currently, 4minute is promoting their follow-up track “Heart To Heart” and are passing the baton to B2ST, who are making their comeback this week with their title track “Fiction“.

10 Mei:

The ladies of 4minute recently shed their fierce image in “Mirror Mirror” for a cuter, sweeter look with their follow-up song, “Heart to Heart.”  Unfortunately, the members are all having a hard time adjusting to the image change.
Girl groups usually run the ‘cute to sexy’ route, so 4minute is actually going backwards in that concept. “Since it’s our first time singing about love since our debut, our agency told us to smile as widely as we could.. but it’s not as easy as we thought.”
HyunA stated, “We’ve always done very powerful songs since our debut, and it’s become a habit for us now to give strong gazes towards the camera.” Gayoon added, “Even though I always think to myself that I need to smile before getting up on stage for ‘Heart to Heart’, it doesn’t work once I get in front of the camera, which makes me upset. It’s as smiley as we’re going to get.”
Leader Jihyun commented, “When we go to the karaoke on our own, we have no problem dancing along to other girl groups’ cute dances. But having to express that with our own song is so difficult.”

21 April:More and more fans have been posting eyewitness accounts of the 4minute members using public transportation to get to work and school.

The high interest in their rides caused Cube Entertainment representatives to reveal, “The members that are college students usually use public transportation to get to school on days where they don’t have anything else scheduled.”
Cube also doesn’t provide exclusive transportation for personal use, such as for going to school.  “It’s a rule in our company that we do not provide transportation for the adult/college members when they go to school. We don’t want such special services to promote an atmosphere of social disharmony and make them feel out of place at school.”
They continued, “The younger members are also still building character, and as students, we feel that this rule fosters their position in society. In short, yes, the members go to school on their own.”
Maknae Sohyun, however, does get driven to school by the company because of the influx of fans waiting outside her school. Because she is still young, the company does not feel safe with her using public transportation alone.

20 April:On April 20th, 4minute’s official fancafe released a video of the girls rehearsing the final version of their choreography for their title track, “Mirror Mirror“.

After showing off their powerful performance style, HyunA turns to the camera and cutely states, “Please look at us prettily.”
Another short video was included after their rehearsal cut, which involved leader Jihyun accidentally hittingmaknae Sohyun with her elbow.  Right after realizing the accident, Jihyun immediately rushes over to Sohyun and pulls her into an apologetic hug.  Fortunately, no injury resulted from it.

19 April:Already three years into their debut, 4minute has been growing every step of the way with each new musical endeavor. Their first official album, “4MINUTES LEFT“, marked the return after a year-long hiatus, as well as their growth as a powerful girl group.

During their latest interview with Sports Today, the first thing the girls said was that they were proud.
Sohyun stated, “We’ve only released mini-albums up until now, so since this is our first official album, we paid extra special attention. There’s not one aspect such as the lyrics, expressions, make up, and performances that we overlooked. Every time people say they like it, our hearts all flutter with excitement.”
She continued, “Our standard charm was the use of strong beats, so we tried to go for something a lot more feminine this time. There’s also an added love story in the lyrics that show a different image”
Jiyoon and Sohyun both participated in the rap making for “Heart to Heart” and “Mirror Mirror“.
Sohyun revealed, “I’ve been practicing for a while now.  Shinsadong Tiger oppa gave us a try for this album and praised us a lot during the recordings, which gave me a lot of strength. It was both an amazing and useful experience.”
On their return, HyunA stated, “We rehearsed with the thought of going back to our rookie mindsets. Without missing a day, we rehearsed from 10 PM to 6 AM, and none of us complained because we knew that it was worth it for our first official album.”
Although the response from the public was explosive, the girls also experienced an unexpected controversy with their ’spread leg’ dance.
Leader Jihyun stated, “We were shocked at first because we expected people to highlight another part of our choreography, the mirror dance. Instead, a part that we did not expect at all began headlining.”
As the girls have focused on their international activities for the past year with formidable achievements, the girls have revealed that they will be focusing on their Korean activities this time around.
Sohyun commented, “For now, we’ll be focusing on our Korean activities. Our album was released overseas at the same time as the Korean release, so if our appearance is requested, we might be going back and forth.”
HyunA added, “It’s been a week since our album’s release, and we’re planning to work hard up through our follow-up promotions. We’re working to make sure that we live up to the expectations of our fans, so please look forward to it.”

18 April:Unfortunately for 4minute, the controversy surrounding their ’spread leg’ choreography came with more consequences than they expected. After being ordered to switch out a portion of their dance, the girls are now receiving IV treatments in order to keep up with the stressful changes.

The girls, especially Gayoon and Jiyoon, are already suffering from severe colds due to the unpredictable weather.
Jiyoon stated, “I got a few severe colds that made me get IV treatments in order to promote.” Gayoon added, “I had to get an IV before our performance on April 14th. Not only me, but HyunA and the others are all in poor condition right now.”
4minute already underwent all-night rehearsals for their “Mirror Mirror” comeback, but with all of the choreography changes they now have to keep up with, the girls practically have no time for rest.
Gayoon stated, “Physically, it’s difficult. Before, we’d go straight to our dorms after we finished our schedules for the day and rest, but we can’t do that at the moment. Still, all of us are working hard to improve our choreography. We did have a lot of anticipation since it is our first comeback in nearly a year. Although there’s been some controversy, we consider it as people taking an interest in us. We promise to show a better side to our image soon.

17 April:In their latest interview with Star News4minute showed their support and love for label mates B2ST andG.NA.

With a laugh, Gayoon revealed, “The members of B2ST are like our cousins, we’re all very close, just like family. We can be called the first team to debut under Cube Entertainment, so we received a lot of love from our CEO and company employees as the only child. But with the debuts of B2ST and G.NA after us, the attention became divided (laughter).”
She continued, “Of course, they still give us so much love, but we’re going to be working harder so that their interest in us will be like old times. The fact that we think preciously of B2ST and G.NA will never change.”
Sohyun added, “B2ST oppas and G.NA unni are all so great. It’s because we have B2ST and G.NA that we’re even more proud of Cube Entertainment.”
She concluded, “We’ll be promoting in Korea a lot this year so that we can become a team that B2ST and G.NA will think is amazing as well.”

12 April:
Kneepads aren’t accessories one would normally associate with girl group outfits.  When put on 4minute, however, even the most mundane of items turn into something special and eye-catching.

Although they’ve already been put on the chopping block numerous times for their provocative choreography, their powerful kneepad-requiring ’spread leg’ dance not only put their male fans in a frenzy, but still managed to catch headlines and separate them from their peers.
Gayoon revealed, “We decided to wear kneepads a day before our first broadcast. We never even thought of it until then; how foolish of us (laughter).”
Maknae Sohyun added, “We actually thought of wearing long pants instead because our legs were already so bruised from rehearsals. All we wanted to do was show our best, so we really didn’t feel any pain.”
Their “Mirror, Mirror” comeback, although controversial, has captivated fans with 78 repetitions of the term ‘mirror’, and of course, their ’spread leg’ dance. The members themselves, however, claim that they had not anticipated the controversy.
HyunA commented, “It’s sexy. Definitely not anything cute (laughter).  I was so into our performance that I didn’t know why people were raving over it at first.”
Jiyoon stated, “I think our female fans feel vicarious through our powerful and confident images. They’re our biggest strengths, but with our recent comeback, I feel that we’ve gotten a lot more male fans. I should be happy, right? (laughter).”
On the topic of fans, the girls have garnered a formidable fanbase overseas through their frequent international promotions. Through the experience, they’ve returned with confidence and with a stronger sense of teamwork.
HyunA stated, “We had two tours in Japan and ranked well with each of our singles. Seeing more and more fans of powerful music makes us realize that music truly has no boundaries.”
The year they’ve been gone has been one of the busiest year for girl groups though, and that flood is still unending. There’s a slew of new junior girl groups benchmarking 4minute, and the market competition is fiercer than ever.
The girls revealed that they do feel more competitive now with more girl groups on the market, but assured fans that they’re more than ready to compete, as long as they had herbal medicine to keep their stamina up.
Jiyoon commented, “With more and more performance oriented girl groups debuting, I feel that we can’t just crumble at this point in our careers. On the other hand, I am proud because it feels like we’ve become role models. There may be a lot of similar girl groups, but I’d rather succeed through something only we can do.”
Jihyun concluded, “Before we began our promotions, we were worried as to whether we’d be able to pull it off. Now that we’re going through things one by one, we feel alive. We may be foolish in obsessing over the more difficult and complex performance styles, but that’s who we are.”

4minute has officially put an end to their ’spread leg’ choreography controversy by announcing that they will no longer be performing it.
On April 12th, CEO Hong Seung Sung of Cube Entertainment spoke through Star News and stated, “We have decided to change a portion of the choreography for ‘Mirror Mirror.”
He continued, “We will be taking out the part where they kneel on the floor and instead replace it with something else.”
As previously reported, Cube Entertainment had considered editing their choreography due to the controversy surrounding the dance. KBS later went ahead by banning the ’spread leg’ dance altogether from their music program, “Music Bank.”
4minute will be showing off the edited choreography for their future performances.

11 April:
After releasing a statement earlier to defend their argument in keeping 4minute’s ’spread leg dance’ in‘Mirror Mirror’Cube Entertainment came forth again to state that they are open to considering the modification of the choreography due to viewers feeling uncomfortable.

On April 11th, Cube Entertainment’s Hong Seung Sung CEO spoke through Star News, “In the perspective of the company or the singer, we don’t believe that the dance of ‘Mirror Mirror’ is provocative at all.”
“The dance for “Mirror Mirror” was created to match the general mood of the song itself. With that being said, we still believe that the dance for this song is not provocative, but if many viewers and netizens have a different opinion, however disappointing, we will seriously consider modifying the dance moves.”
Source: Star News via Nate via allkpop

4minute’s comeback has been earning endless headlines for their ’spread leg dance’ in “Mirror Mirror“, which many believe is too provocative to be performed on TV.
As the controversy continues to escalate, representatives of Cube Entertainment took the time to clarify the matter through Star News:
“It is not a provocative dance performance, but rather a form of expression.
It was our adaptation of the expression, ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?’  This can be seen in the members’ gaze and facial expressions – all of which are an expression of the song’s concept.

Why are performances put on by figure skaters and synchronized swimmers regarded as art, but performances by singers are automatically sexually suggestive? Music programs, at first, did say that it was rather out there but they acknowledged it as a form of performance.

Just because the choreography has been put on the chopping block of controversy does not mean we will be making changes to it. We will be continuing to promote with it on broadcast programs.”

Despite Cube Entertainment’s statement, viewers were concerned with the fact that the girls were forced to wear knee-pads in order to perform the seconds-long ’spread leg’ dance, and questioned whether it was worth it.
They were also quick to notice the bruises all over the girls’ knees and legs, showing the months of preparation the girls put into the choreography.
Another representative responded, “We do tell them to be careful every time they rehearse, but the girls themselves are very devoted in their practice, which is why the bruises have come about. There is no longer a risk of injury as we have gotten them efficient knee-pads.”

10 April:
4minute has been successfully making their round of comeback performances however, they have been gaining some criticisms, thanks to the ‘too sexy’ nature of their ’spread leg’ dance in “Mirror Mirror“.

This ’spread leg’ dance occurs after the second verse, where the five girls are on their knees spreading their legs open and closed in a repetitive manner. While the girls wore leggings in the song’s music video, they wore short shorts in their live performance, making their dance appear to look more provocative. HyunA’s additional sensuous movement’s only added to this impression.

9 April:
4minute expressed some anxiety about their comeback, saying “Making a comeback after a long hiatus makes us nervous, to be honest.” They added, “Even anxious.”

Making our comeback in Korea is a big burden for us. While other girl groups worked nonstop, we took a break for a year. They confessed, “Because of this, our biggest worry is that fans might have forgotten us.
On their new album 4minute said, “Through this album, we’re trying to become closer with our fans. We made the choreography easy so that fans could follow along. We want to be the 4minute that fans want to hear.”
That’s why they picked “Heart to Heart” as their title song – “The song really talks about a girl’s emotions. We were really satisfied with that song, it marks the first time that love is the theme of one of our songs. Before that, most of our songs were about one’s self.
Finally, to close up, they said, “We hope that you receive our new concept with love. From now on, we will maintain our unique colors and show you the different sides of 4minute.”

Although “Heart to Heart” is doing strong on the charts, the girls wanted to express an image different to the one they’ve shown so far, and decided to add a full album in addition to a single. “Mirror, Mirror” will hold 4minute’s charismatic color, but with an upgraded twist that gives it a more powerful and unique feel.
Because they’ve been away from the Korean music scene for so long, Cube Entertainment revealed that they wanted to try a new marketing style, and allowed the girls to showcase a wider variety of tracks for their fans.

They began filming for their music video on the 9th amidst final preparations for their choreography and stage performance. Maknae Sohyun gave fans a hint by tweeting, “Today is starting earlier than most days, and will be just as long~ Please give us your fighting energy~!!! We’ve been wondering how to spoil the surprise since a few days ago. Fighting!”
Their representative concluded, “We paid the most attention to the track selections. We’re sure that their comeback album will be another daebak that will set it apart from the girls’ previous releases.”

10 Februari:
Although Cube Entertainment has yet to release any information in regards to 4minute debuting outside Korea and Japan, it seems like there’s already some interest brewing from internationally-based sources.
After 4minute won the “K-Pop New Artist of the Year” award at the Billboard Japan Music Awards 2010 that took place earlier this week, the victory earned attention from CNN’s Asian online newspaper CNNGo as well as Billboard’s B2B website Billboard.biz.
The CNNGo article praised,
“Winners on the night, chosen by Billboard, included one of the leaders of the K-Pop boom, girl group 4Minute, who took home a Korea Billboard Special Award.
The five-piece showed exactly why South Korean acts are stealing a march on their Japanese counterparts with tightly choreographed performances of “First” and “Muzik,” with the hall’s speaker system booming.
Fans screamed out the names of the girls, who did their best to answer questions on stage in Japanese, and the five-piece delighted the press by hanging around for extra shots, before attending a luxury after-party at the Ritz Carlton hotel.”
Billboard.biz also included 4minute in their coverage, posting their Japanese FIRST music video, commenting on the girls’ fashion and choreography. A representative of 4minute revealed today, “On the day of the Billboard Awards, Bill Werde, the American Billboard’s editorial director, asked for an applause from the audience after 4minute’s performance, then said, ‘It’s a pity that a group like this is known only in Asia.’
Werde continued to praise the quintet on his personal Twitter (@bwerde), tweeting, “K-poppers 4 Minute play @ Billboard Japan awards. Some1 needs to explain why they aren’t stars in US. Catchy songs, great look, high energy … K-pop has really taken over the japanese market, and asia in gen.” Werde also promised to publish an article on Billboard.com soon to focus on the 4minute.
According to the eDaily report, 4minute has finished preparing for their debut in America. No other details or official reports have been released about such a debut, but stay tuned to allkpop as we continue to follow this matter.
