Birth of a Great Star

4 Feb:

Idol group INFINITE has produced several PSA videos to help advocate against animal abandonment.
The idea was inspired by INFINITE’s dog, Tofu, who became a temporary family member along with two other Jindo puppies for KBS‘s variety show, ‘Birth of a Family‘.
Since INFINITE can’t keep the puppies, they’ve been made available for adoption through the show. Out of the three, Tofu has yet to find a home; he will have to return to the animal shelter if no one claims him by the end. The boys learned that Tofu’s case is similar to that of the 100,000+ dogs who get abandoned every year.
Disturbed by this issue, the members decided to launch a campaign against animal abandonment. The boys ran the entire production, from PR to filming and acting.
In the videos, the members tried to convey the betrayal felt by a dog when their owner abandons them. “We were happy… Were you…. Were you so good to me so that you could do this? Did you not love me?“, they asked.
Each PSA ends with the message, “If they could speak, would you still throw them away?

17 September:

Lee Hyori‘s dancer, Kim Hye Rang, shed tears after receiving harsh criticisms on ‘Birth of a Great Star 2′.
Kim Hye Rang appeared on the show’s September 16th episode, and it was revealed that she’s taught dance to many singers aside from Lee Hyori.
The dancer’s talents in the pop-’n-lock field are said to be world-class, and she proved it when she showed off abilities in front of the judges, receiving enthusiastic applause.
However, when she followed that up with her rendition of Hwayobi‘s “Bye Bye Bye”, the judges were less than impressed.
Judge Yoon Il Sang remarked, “You have no rhythm and your vocals were totally lacking.. You’re better off working harder in the area you’re good at”.
Kim Hye Rang had revealed before her audition that “I started dance in order to become a singer”.

5 June:

MBC’s Birth of a Great Star” contestant, Kwon Ri Sae is receiving some criticism for her performance of Lee Hyori’s “U-Go-Girl”.
On June 3rd, “Birth of Great Star” held a “Great Concert” for the TOP12 contestants including: Kwon Ri Sae, Lee Tae Kwon, Son Jin Young, Jo Hyung Woo, Hwang Ji Hwan, Shayne, Jung Hee Joo, Baek Sae Eun, Kim Hye Ri, Noh Ji Hoon, David Oh, and Baek Chung Gang. Among the amazing performances, Kwon Ri Sae performed Lee Hyori’s hit track, “U-Go-Girl”.
With her outgoing expression and confident performance, on the surface it seemed that Kwon Ri Sae had improved tremendously. Also, her vivid color makeup and outfit added an extra bit of ‘fun’ to the stage. However, a problem arose because Kwon Ri Sae had actually lip lynched throughout the song.
Some netizens who saw this performance criticized her for her lip synched performance stating, “Did she only practice on her looks, dance, and fashion?” “This performance was not for a survival program where the vocal skills is the most important factor.” “It was weird that only Kwon Ri Sae lip synched.”
However, other netizens supported Kwon Ri Sae stating, “For a star, having the correct stage manner is important” “It was sad to see her lip synching but her Barbie-doll like makeup and outfit made her performance outstanding.” “She might have had another reason. It’s not good to criticize her like this.”
What do you think, was lip synching the way to go?

Lee Tae Kwon went on stage first and delivered an impressive cover of YB’s “Peppermint”.Afterwards, Baek Chung Gang stepped up and performed Big Mama’s “Resignation”. MBC’s “Birth of a Great Star” saw some stellar performances this week, but none could best contestant Shayne, who received top honors and high praise from the judges.
On May 6th, the competition for the Top 5 took place, for which Shayne chose to cover Shim Soo Bong’s “That Time, The Person”. To make this classic ballad fit his style, he infused a jazz twist to the song, which resulted in a fantasy-like performance.
His mentors praised, “Your darkish appeal gave a big help to you.” This was a beautiful performance.” and “It was good to see you mature as a performer.”
Lee Eun Mi especially expressed lavish praise, and said, “This performance was better than what I expected. Your sensible expression of the song really touched my heart.”

MBC’s “Birth of a Great Star” eliminated another popular contestant this week. Unfortunately, it was David Oh who got the axe this time around.
On May 6th, the competition for the Top 5 contestants took place, for which David Oh decided to cover Sharp’s “After the Play Has Ended” to show off his sweet appeal.
Unlike his usual strong image, David Oh tried out something a little different. His mentors praised his performance with, “You have a peaceful voice” and “It seems like you are becoming a lot more stable”.However, one judge commented, “I’m kind of disappointed. I wish you chose a song that would make your attractiveness stand out more.”
With the mentor’s scores, David Oh ranked 3rd and had a high possibility of continuing onto the Top 4. However, due to text message votes, David Oh ended up being eliminated. Upon hearing the verdict, David Oh stated, “I would like to thank everyone, especially Teacher Bang Shi Hyuk.”
Holding back tears, he continued, “This is only my first step. I will pursue my music career in Korea. I want to thank all my fans who came here. You gave me a lot of support.”

24 April:

Singer Lee Eun Mi became the first mentor to have no students for MBC’s “Birth of a Great Star”.
With the elimination of Kim Hye Ri, who was thought to be one of the top contestants, from the Top 8, Lee Eun Mi became the first mentor to have no remaining students.
On this day, Kim Hye Ri sang Wonder Girl’s “2 Different Tears” as part of the mission to “Challenge as an idol singer”. With a whole new appearance, Kim Hye Ri put on a leather jacket and smoky makeup to show a sense of strong charisma. However, the judges ultimately criticized her for her lack of rhythm.
After it was decided that Kim Hye Ri would be eliminated, Lee Eun Mi gave a supporting message to her by saying, “In this world where the end result only matters, the fact that you learned the process towards the end result is just as important as the end result itself. This whole process will be a big help to you.”
During the next broadcast, Lee Eun Mi will only be acting as a judge.

Contestant Baek Chung Gang is receiving interest for his “Heartbreaker” performance.

During MBC’s “Birth of a Great Star,” the Top 8 contestants received a challenge to sing an idol singer’s songs.
On this day, Baek Chung Gang showed off a different stage of Big Bang G-Dragon’s “Heartbreaker”. Baek Chung Gang, who usually wore simple and clean clothes, donned idol-like clothing and showed off his hidden dance skills.
The judges’ opinons were divided. Baek Chung Gang’s mentor, Kim Tae Won, complimented him by saying, “While others use machines to make some noises, Baek Chung Gang’s was all real. This was a perfect stage.”
Kim Yoon Ah and Shin Seung Hoon also complimented him by saying, “I was captivated by Baek Chung Gang’s charisma” and both gave him a high score of a 9.
However, Lee Eun Mi and Bang Shi Hyuk disagreed, “There was no personal feel to it. You just followed G-Dragon,” both gave him a score of 7.
