On August 4th, SECRET performed at “Mezamashi Live 2011” in Odaiba (large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, Japan). At the event, the ladies of SECRET yelled out enthusiastically, “SECRET will advance in Japan, step-by-step, together with everyone who supports us”.
The group performed their big Korean hits including “MAGIC”, “Shy Boy”, “Starlight Moonlight” and their Japanese debut song “Madonna”, which recently entered in the top 10 of Oricon’s Daily Ranking chart. The members commented in Japanese, “We were able to debut in Japan thanks to all of you guys. Everyone, let’s get even more pumped up!!”, causing everyone at the venue to go wild.
The girls had a big breakthrough in Korea this year with “Shy Boy” and debuted on August 3rd in Japan with their single “Madonna”. The girls are well known for starting off with less than stellar living conditions and were given the name “Basement Idols”.
2 August:
Labeled as the sweet and feminine girl-group of K-Pop, the ladies of SECRET have made their official debut in Japan by releasing their new single, “Madonna“, on August 3rd.
SECRET’s label TS Entertainment publicly announced, “Due to the persistent requests made bySONY Music, SECRET finally decided to record and release the Japanese version of their single, ‘Madonna’, and have officially begun their promotions in Japan.”
The girls have already made a strong first impression in Tokyo through a showcase that took place on July 6th. Not only that, they’ve also got the strong backing of one of Japan’s largest music agencies, who successfully launched the Japanese career of artists like 2PM and MBLAQ.
SECRET’s label management stated, “Instead of putting too much effort into perfecting their performances, we are more interested in making sure SECRET’s songs speak to the fans, and prove they have the skills to support their music.”
SECRET departed for Japan on August 2nd, and while there, they’ll be tackling a busy schedule with a few TV appearances, meet-and-greets, and media interviews. They will return to Korea in a week’s time.

13 July:
SECRET’s agency, TS Entertainment, has announced that SECRET is now concluding their “Starlight Moonlight” promotions, and will be moving forward to work on their next full album.
SECRET successfully reached the #1 spot on most major music programs with “Starlight Moonlight”, and became a sensation with their ‘Baby Gorilla’ dance.
Having racked up many awards with “Madonna“, “Shy Boy“, and now “Starlight Moonlight”, SECRET have proved themselves to be one of Korea’s more formidable girl groups.
In response to their success, SECRET thanked their fans for all of their love and support, and promised to work harder in return.
SECRET is scheduled to release the Japanese remake of their single, “Madonna” on August 3rd, and are planning an official debut in Japan.
Tears poured out of the members of SECRET during their showcase in Japan.
SECRET’s first showcase in Japan, which took place on July 6th, was featured on the July 13th episode of SBS’s “One Night of TV Entertainment”
While on stage at the showcase, Hyosung spoke in Japanese, “I thought of the times of when I was a trainee for 3 years and 6 months, when we first debuted in Korea. The times when I had heartaches, and when I was living in a basement”, and began tearing.
She continued, “I will never forget everyone here. I thank you all so much”.
The members of SECRET and fans in Japan all reminisced about the hard times in the past and cried together. The members couldn’t stop crying even after they came off the stage.
That night, Sunhwa confessed, “I didn’t cry when we hit number one in Korea. I’ve never spoke of anything like this because people pitied us for our hard beginnings and I didn’t like that. My pride was hurt. But today, it wasn’t about any of that. I just wanted to let everything go. Today, I thought, ‘I’m just going to cry’”, revealing her true feelings.
Hyosung, who revealed the passing away of her father before her debut, couldn’t stop crying as she resolved, “My family… I will work even harder so I can give back so much more and return all of the love my family gave me”.
She continued, “I’m most thankful for the members of SECRET. Just being with each other gave us all the strength we needed”, revealing their strong bond and friendship.

30 June:
SECRET will be leaving for Japan on July 4th in order to prepare for their debut Japanese showcase in Harajuku, Tokyo.
As reported previously, their debut track is a Japanese version of “Madonna“, which was chosen in part due to the many requests of their Japanese fans asking to hear the song in their language.
SECRET said, “We’re honestly nervous and pressured, but there’s a lot of anticipation going on. Like in Korea, we will work hard and do our best.”
The girls were then asked whether they felt any pressure about debuting at the same time as T-ara, who are debuting on July 5th at the SHIBUYA-AX, as well as promoting alongside the likes of fellow Korean girl groups, KARA and SNSD.
Zinger replied, “With the popularity of K-pop soaring, a lot of other girl groups are promoting in Japan. But I think it’s the same as promoting with them in Korea. We’re going to win with a color of our own, just like we’ve done up until now.”
Ji Eun added, “As opposed to competing against them, we want to focus on showing everyone that ‘this is the level of Korean girl groups’. We’ll be working hard to achieve that.”
The girls will be returning on July 6th to continue their “Starlight Moonlight” promotions.
28 June:
With the popularity of their second single album’s title song “Starlight Moonlight“, SECRET made a special appearance on the news channel YTN ‘Issues and People‘ on June 28th.
Because of the popularity of the “Starlight Moolight” dance, anchor Jung Chan Bae asked the girls,“How would you dance the gorilla dance?” Song Ji Eun showed the dance by singing the song and hitting her chest with both hands.
Anchor Jung commented, “That’s very easy. Isn’t it supposed to be like this”, while showing off his own gorilla dance shaking both of his arms. SECRET complimented him, “You’re doing it well,” as anchor Jung responded, “It’s probably helpful in removing stomach fat.”
SECRET also showed off their teamwork as they mentioned, “We don’t have many fights. When we have something to say, we each say it and by conversing, it all gets resolved.”
Netizens responded with, “I was happy to see SECRET make an appearance on the news”, “SECRET news appearance seems to happening quite frequently these days”, “SECRET’s news appearance made the stale news studio feel fresh.”
23 June:
SECRET’s “Starlight Moonlight” concept is most definitely a sweet, feminine one that calls for a skinnier figure than most concepts. Naturally, and like other girl groups, the ladies are undergoing strict dieting, with the only exception being Sunday, where they’re allowed to eat whatever they wish.
They revealed, “On Sunday afternoon, we conclude a week’s worth of music programs after SBS’s ‘Inkigayo.’ After dieting all week long, we’re allowed to eat whatever we want for dinner on Sunday night, and then we starve again. Our manager makes sure that there are sandwiches before we get on the ‘Inkigayo’ stage. The minute we get off stage, we have a sandwich in our mouths.”
So how did they achieve their healthy, slim figures? Check it out below!
–
▶ Song Ji Eun (21, 160 cm, 45 kg)
The secret to Song Ji Eun’s exercise is that she repeats the choreography for “Magic” and “Madonna” 20 times each. The studio is only five minutes from their dorm in Hannam-dong so she dances and then concludes with a video on “Lee Sora’s Dieting Tips.”
“Before, we used to fast, but that brought about a vertigo effect. In the end, we realized that exercising was the best.”
The members chose her lips as her charm point since it has the perfect reddish tint that helps her look lively even without make up. When asked to choose a feature on her face that they liked the most, they chose her nose. “My nose bridge isn’t high, but it fits her face perfectly. It’s all natural but people still think she got it done. It must be because my mom molded it by touching it a lot when I was little.”
As for what she wears and carries around, she revealed that she doesn’t care about brand names and prefers casual brands like H&M. Her biggest worry lately is her damaged hair because of the drastic style changes she’s undergone with each comeback. ”They’re damaged all the way to the roots so I have to use extensions these days. I’m really jealous of people with shiny hair.”
▶ Han Sunhwa (21, 165 cm, 46 kg)
Sunhwa is known for her clear, beautiful skin, which the members chose as her #1 charm point. “Make up for TV shows is too thick so I usually don’t wear make up outside of work in order to let my skin rest. I don’t manage my skin in any particular way but I do make sure to moisturize it often.”
Right before their “Starlight Moonlight” comeback, Sunhwa became an exercise fanatic.
“When we’re promoting our album, there’s a lot of wait times so we’re sitting in our cars a lot. I felt like I was gaining weight around my hips so I started to climb mountains. I climbed whenever I wanted to about four times a week.”
For breakfast, she’ll have a banana, milk, and bean dduk, and for lunch, egg whites and chicken salad. For dunner, she’ll have a simple salad. Her complex is her large forehead. “Other girls like Goo Harahave a lot of baby hairs on their forehead so it’s cute, but I have to shadow it in.”
▶ Zinger (21, 161 cm, 48 kg)
Zinger underwent the strictest dieting before their comeback. She lost 6 kg in a week by drinking just water for a week because her larger hips and legs were her biggest concerns.
“On stage, I saw one of the audience members tell me to screw off stage. I was really hurt by that so I was determined to lose weight. After starving and going through strict rehearsals, I began to get dizzy. I looked in the mirror after about a week and noticed that I had dark circles all the way up to my chin so I began eating again then.”
Zinger, like the rapper she is, enjoys hip hop fashion and also likes collecting hats. She has over 30 New Era hats, and because her company doesn’t allow the girls to go out without permission, she (as well as the others) buys everything online.
“Without missing a day, we always get something shipped to us. On off days, we open all of the boxes.”
▶ Jun Hyosung (22, 160 cm, 45 kg)
Hyosung’s cute, baby-like looks has ranked her as one of the most youthful looking idols. Still, Sunhwa chose Hyosung’s “enviable butt line” as her charm point. “I’m really jealous of unni’s hip line. When I look at her come out of the shower, she really has a curvy waist and voluminous butt. She’s a true S-line.”
Because she likes beans, she diets with soybean milk and tofu and considers dance rehearsals as the best form of exercise.
Her complex? Her big, ugly feet. She wears 240 mm and isn’t able to wear strap sandals or heels with complex designs.
Hyosung’s also known for having once been the member of ‘Five Girls‘. The final member, Yang Jiwon, is currently preparing for debut under Lee Hyori’s agency. “I didn’t think we’d all be debuting separately and promoting away from each other like now. When the group first disbanded, everything looked so dark and bleak to me… I hope we can do a special ‘Five Girls’ stage at a year-end ceremony some day.”
SECRET revealed that they still lacked cell phones three years into their career. Although it was explained that they were used to it and didn’t feel the need for one, the girls seem to feel the pinch a bit, as they vocalized their slight frustration while on KBS’s “Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook.”
SECRET said that the reason they had a strong friendship was because they didn’t have cellphones.“When you look at other teams, they’re usually on their phone or playing games and surfing the web on it when they’re re-locating or in waiting rooms. Since we don’t have cell phones, we only have each other for entertainment, so we become closer like that.”
When asked whether they got rid of their cell phones themselves, they said, “No, it was in our contracts when we signed on.”
They continued, “We were originally supposed to get our cell phones back in January of 2012, but they changed their word again. Now we won’t get it back until we win #1 in Japan.”
The girls were then asked, “If, in the future, you set up your own label and produced your own girl group, would you let them have cell phones?” With a laugh, they replied, “No. We’d never allow it!”
21 June:
Girl group SECRET made a sweeping comeback with “Starlight Moonlight“, which signalled their growth both as artists and female idols. Every time SECRET released a new single, it’s more or less recorded first place; simultaneously, their number of male fans has also increased exponentially.
The girls were recently interviewed about their charms, which shone through both their performances and music video.
When asked “Do you practice your eye-smiles every day?”, SECRET shook their hands feverishly said, “Not ever. All four of us naturally have eye-smiles. We’re born with it.”
The reporter then moved on to ask which aspects stood out the most with this album, to which Hyosung boldly replied, “We became more feminine and prettier. Shy charms were also added.”
Hyosung also felt that SECRET’s fanbase had increased because of this album. The members agreed that, “We have a lot of uncle fans, but through ‘Starlight Moonlight’, we acquired a lot of young fans as well. Before, we learned our fans’ names, but now, we can’t memorize them all. On the one hand, we’re sorry to the fans, but on the other hand, we feel kind of accomplished when we see our increasing fanbase.”
The girls concluded their mini-interview with a vocalization of their goals. “Now that we possess the know-hows of the stage, we have a more relaxed outlook as well. Recently, it’s been hard with all the schedules, but we’ll pursue activities busily. We think that we’ll have a better result in the future if we work hard in Japan as well.”

Despite being at the top of their game lately, it’s been revealed that the ladies of SECRET still don’t own cell phones.
It’s not unusual for idol groups to not have cell phones, since agencies usually confiscate them in order to encourage their artists to focus on their training, and to prevent them from seeing anti-fan comments.
Still, idols are usually promised cell phones once they make notable achievements, like winning first place on music shows, so the fact that SECRET still lacks personal phones comes as a surprise to most fans.
One representative confirmed, “The members do not have cell phones. They’ve been without them for two years, so the members are used to it and don’t feel any discomfort from lacking one. Any important calls they have to make, they go through their manager’s phone or the phone in the agency. Our office is also close to their dorm so the members don’t feel the need for cell phones yet.”

Despite being a year and four months into their careers, the SECRET members revealed that they still lack cell phones.
With a laugh, they casually stated, “We still don’t have cell phones. At this point, we’ve all forgotten what cell phones are even used for.”
They revealed that of course they still wanted cell phones, especially now that there’s a variety of smartphones with cool applications. Hyosung revealed, “I honestly do really want one, but there’s nothing uncomfortable about not having one. And since all of us equally don’t have one, there aren’t any big problems.”
The reason behind why they aren’t allowed to have cell phones is said to be because of team solidarity. In SECRET’s case, they were born out of a start-up company and had to reach where they are now through pure passion, effort, and team work.
Sunhwa explained, “Even if we fight on our own, we have no choice but to make up on our own as well. These experiences help us to become stronger, so we understand. We don’t even ask to use cell phones.”
Won Geun Young, director of TS Entertainment, also commented on the issue. “Depending on your viewpoint, the rule can seem forceful from the company’s end, but we’re very thankful for the members’ understanding. We’re also proud of them as well. For their two year anniversary, we’re planning to present them with the latest cell phones from the market.”
