Bi-racial girl group Chocolat has dressed up in traditional hanbok dresses to send fans their first-ever Chuseok greetings.
With a laugh, they revealed, “We’ve always loved wearing hanboks.” Although three of the members grew up in the States, they still celebrated Chuseok with their families.
Juliane revealed, “I’d spend Chuseok with rice cakes made by my mom and aunt. I didn’t know at the time that it was such a big holiday. It’s a lot of fun making songpyeon with my relatives in Korea.”
Tia added, “My cousins took me out shopping in Myungdong after I came to Korea for Chuseok, and I was excited to see all the pretty clothes and people. I made songpyeon at home, but I guess I got kind of ambitious because I made them kind of weird, which caused my family members to tease me.”
She continued, “It’s not just when we’re wearing hanbok that we feel Korean. We’ve always strongly felt Korean and are in love with Korean culture and its holidays.”
Melanie revealed, “My mom dressed me in hanboks often when I was a child. They’re such beautiful dresses and I feel like I’ve truly grown as an adult after wearing one now.”
The members will be briefly spending their holiday with their families before going back to the training room. Leader Min Soa stated, “The holiday is four days long. I’m going to go home for at least one of the days and spend the rest in the training room with the other members. We’re going to train hard so that we can meet you with a better image after the holidays.”
Jae Yoon stated, “If we can’t go home on the day of Chuseok, I’m planning to make songpyeon at the dorm with the other members. We have to spend the rest of our time on our ‘Syndrome’ training.”
She concluded, “As soon as we made our debut, our cousins sent a lot of supportive calls and text messages. Although we might not be able to see them during Chuseok because of our training, we’re going to work hard so that we can stand confidently before them next year.”

24 August:
As Korea’s first ever bi-racial group, Chocolat immediately caught everyone’s attention thanks to their unique, if not exotic appeal. While the girls are certainly cute and charming, many expressed interest in learning about their parents’ love stories.
Born in America and raised in Japan, Tia (15) spent her adolescent years going back and forth between Korea and Japan. She said, “I was born in America but after six months, I flew to Japan. When I was 7 years old, I came to Korea, but then returned to Japan when I was 10. I went back to Korea after just two years. I’ve been in Korea for about two years so far.”
Tia continued, “My mom and my dad first met when my mom moved to Hawaii. She said that it was love at first sight. They married shortly after and she had to move to Japan because of my dad’s work.”
Maknae Melanie (15) also revealed that her parents first met when they were in Hawaii. Melanie said, “My mom and her friend owned a restaurant together in Hawaii, and my dad said he fell in love with my mom when he ate at her restaurant. My dad was a soldier at the time, but he still followed my mom around. After a while, he brought my grandparents over to introduce my mom, and they got married.”
Melanie and Tia’s mothers’ were already acquainted with one another from when they lived in Hawaii, and bonded quickly as they shared many similarities, one being that their daughters were of similar age. It was because of Tia’s mother that Melanie’s mother became aware of the group Chocolat.
Julianne (19) told a similar story about her parents, as she explained, “I heard that they met through a friend. I’m not sure how the story goes, but I think that my dad liked my mom more. They married, gave birth to me, and then left for Texas when I was about 6 years old. We lived there for about 5 years“.
Julianne and Melanie’s mothers also knew each other and Julianne became a part of Chocolat through Melanie’s mothers’ suggestion.
The eldest member, SoA (23) shared that she managed to become a part of Chocolat after auditioning in Australia. As for her parents’ love story, she explained, “My mom and my dad are 7 years apart. They say that my dad kept following my mother around. My mom was naive and young, so she fell for my dad’s perseverance. Luckily because of him, I was born.”
Last, but certainly not least, Jae Yoon (21) revealed, “My parents were a campus couple. They already had their future set.” She also said that she had received a trophy every time she went on singing talent shows, making her parents very proud. She once went on a singing talent show when she was 12 years old, and had performed while playing the piano. Ever since then, Jaeyoon decided that she wanted to be a singer when she grew up.
Jaeyoon ended her story with a little comment directed towards her parents, “I’m always thankful for my parents. There are still so many hardships I have to go through, but I want to make my parents proud. That’s my main goal.”
17 August:
There’s a hot new girl group in town, and they just released their debut digital single “Syndrome” on August 17th. Chocolat– a five-member girl group, three of which have American fathers and Korean mothers — made headlines for being bi-racial members, but that’s not all there is to these girls.
When they sat down for an interview with StarIn, they stated, “If we thought we were going to be “just another girl group”, we wouldn’t have even started this whole thing“.
They continued, “All five of us are very unique individuals and we possess different talents. The five of us together make a powerful group.”
Jae Yoon (20) is the main vocalist, Min Soa (22) can sing a range of different musical styles including Korean Trot, Tia (15) can dance freestyle to any genre of music, Juliane (18) has great vocal tone, andMelanie (15) has a great sense of humor and brings in a lot of energy into the group.
As talented as they are, Chocolat is afraid that people will have preconceived notions about them because they are a bi-racial group. Since the girls are also pretty, they are a bit worried people will stereotype them as a group who focuses on looks, rather than talent.
Melanie, Tia, and Juliane are of mixed race and they’re not sure how they will handle the attention they’ll receive based on the fact that they look different from most Korean girl groups.
“We are thankful for the extra attention, however, we want people to know that we too are Korean and we don’t want to be treated any differently.”
Jae Yoon and Min Soa also stated, “None of us have ever gone under the knife. We are 100% natural beauties. People think otherwise because we are mixed, but we really haven’t gotten any plastic surgery. Our agency’s president told us no, anyway.”
Chocolat states that although there is a lot of pressure, they are enjoying it.
“Expectations are high for us so we were worried we wouldn’t be able to live up to them. But we are working hard so that we do not disappoint. ”
They concluded, ”We don’t want to stop at Korea; we want our names to be known all over the world. That’s our main goal. …In the beginning, we worried we wouldn’t be able to pull this off, or we wouldn’t be successful. But the important thing is that we won’t give up until we’re known worldwide. We want to show you everything we’ve prepared so far. Watch out for Chocolat!”

During Osen’s interview with new girl group Chocolat, the members revealed, “We want to be like the girl group 2NE1.”
Chocolat, which includes three girls who are of mixed race, have trained and polished their skills for the past two and a half years.
Leader, Soa, stated, “2NE1 sunbae-nims’ personalities are very distinct. That aspect of them leaves a very deep impression. Likewise, our members’ personalities are distinct, so we want to be similar to 2NE1’s charms.”
When asked what type of personalities the members had, she replied, “First off as the leader, I’m like the oldest sister who diligently takes care of the others. Jae Yoon, who is the main vocal, has an easygoing nature and strong charisma. Juliane has a sexy body. Because she enjoyed cheerleading and various sports in America, she especially pays good attention to exercise. Melanie, who is in charge of the artistic features, is good at emulating Park Bom’s and IU’s voices, she also sets the atmosphere. Tia is full of aegyo (cuteness). It’s fun because she always does aegyo to us, her unnies.”
In response to Soa’s words, Tia gave three examples of her aegyo by saying, “Unnie, hug me,” “Unnie, I’m hungry,” and, “Unnie, I missed you.”
Chocolat will be debuting with their first single album ‘Syndrome’ on the 17th.
