Producers of SBS recently went behind-the-scenes of their historical drama, ‘A Tree of Deep Roots‘, and interviewed Super Junior‘s Kim Kibum on his audition and role.
The clip starts off footage straight from his audition for the drama. Kibum gives a brief script reading for a camera test. The director praises back, “You were great.”
Looking back on his audition, Kibum commented, “When I first met the director, I was sick so I remember being really quiet. I think that image influenced his decision to give me the role of ‘Park Paeng Nyun’.”
When asked to describe his character, he replied, “I’m the quiet and highly traditional side character that contrasts against ‘Sung Sam Moon’, who’s really quite the jokester and the energizer of the group.”
After revealing that he was growing out a mustache for his role, he stated, “I think viewers won’t be used to seeing this side of me. But I’m sure they’ll get used to it after seeing me three or four more times. I’ve been tweeting pictures and whatnot to help ease the image transition.”

Actor Jang Hyuk began, “When I first was given the original story, I didn’t have any intention of working on the drama. The role wasn’t all that charming in the book but once I read the synopsis and the script, I decided to take it because I felt that the character was amusing.”
When asked about the comparisons between his previous role as the beastly ‘Daegil’ on ‘Chuno‘, he said, “I feel like I’m being enclosed or stereotyped in the image of an actor that only does action work. The difference actually lies not in me but how the director chooses to direct the work. ‘Daegil’ and ‘Chae Yoon’ are two essentially different characters so I know that the action scenes between them will be different.”
Shin Se Kyung also talked a bit about her character by explaining, “I play the character of a woman that has aphasia. In the beginning of the drama, I don’t have many scenes where I’m actually talking so it was difficult for me to figure out how to express myself.”
She continued, “The scenes where I communicated by writing on paper were the hardest to film. Having to act out aphasia was truly difficult but I did slowly get used to it. Now, I’ve gotten more comfortable with it and am learning how to have more fun on set.”
The drama, an interpretation of King Sejong’s life, will begin airing on October 5.

Shin Se Kyung revealed her graceful figure during the poster photo shoot of SBS’s new drama, “Tree With Deep Roots”. The deep red skirt and the bright blue top showcased her fresh beauty, while the combination of her milky skin and clean smile further enhanced her innocent charm.
Shin Se Kyung has been keeping busy after the release of her movie, “Blue Salt”, and is currently filming “Tree With Deep Roots”.

The filming was open to reporters on August 9th at Seoul in the Gyeongheoru Pavillion.
Commenting about the filmimg, Shin Se Kyung said, “We haven’t started filming yet. But, I was happy to meet Han Suk Kyu and Jang Hyuk sunbaes. I am happy with just this opportunity alone. I think I was so lucky. More than anything else, I’m worried about what I’ll be like in this perfect environment. I think I need to work a lot harder in order not to become a flaw“.
Shin Se Kyung is acting as a character who doesn’t talk, which many people think she lacks the ability to. Since it’s difficult to act without talking, Shin Se Kyung stated, “I have been thinking about how to express emotions, as there are a lot of emotions I express with words. But now, after thinking a lot and researching, I have organized my thoughts.”
Meanwhile, Jang Hyuk, who played a similar role in the drama, ‘Chuno‘, stated,”I look for roles where the character can move people, and try to showchase my creativity in those moments.”
The mystery drama, ‘Tree of Deep Roots’, is attracting a lot of attention not just for its all-star cast – which also boasts the participation of Song Joong Ki -, but because it will marks the end of Han Suk Kyu’s 16-year hiatus. This drama’s pilot episode will be broadcast on September 28th.
