BoA’s abilities as a performer have always been one of her renowned qualities. Despite her being a solo act, her stage presence can fill an entire arena, almost on par with the on-stage antics delivered by larger group acts. I discovered how lacking I was in my skills through a debut showcase in Japan,” BoA says, “I think that’s when my fear of the stage began.”
She reveals that one of the hurtful commentaries she heard during then was, “It seems it’ll take this girl at least ten years in order for her to hold a concert here.”
Ever since I was a trainee I always had trouble with executing notes in the higher range and have been criticized for it,” confesses BoA, “My live singing was never my forte, and I was trained more intensely in areas such as dancing more so than vocals”
She adds, “For me it was 20% talent, and 80% persevering hard work,” revealing just how much effort it took for her to be recognized as the performer she is today.

BoA revealed, “I saw J.Y. Park and Yang Hyun Suk for the first time during the first recording of ‘K-Pop Star’. J.Y. Park told me to call him ‘oppa’, but Yang Hyun Suk told me to call him ‘President’, which made me feel a bit uncomfortable… But after President Yang Hyun Suk came late to a recording, I couldn’t help but ask him, ‘Can’t you come a little earlier?’, and I began to comfortably call him ‘oppa’ after that incident.”
She also commented on her nickname “sharp tongue”, which was given to her because of her critiques on the reality program: “My personality is usually very straightforward. Even when I work, I can’t [say things pleasantly]. After I became a judge, I tried to say things in a feminine way, but my [real] personality eventually came out.”

On the May 29th episode of KBS 2TV‘s ‘Win Win‘, BoA revealed her popularity among agencies before her debut.
BoA shared, “When I was in the [final year] of elementary school, I attended a dance competition at a local department store with one of my older brothers who was an active b-boy at the time. Although I couldn’t participate because I was too young, I got to go on stage and dance for the supporting guest ceremony. Afterwards, I received business cards from 15 agencies.”
“I signed a contract with SM Entertainment in elementary school and started my trainee period. I commuted by bus and subway for 2 hours everyday by myself to go from my home in Nam Yang Ju, Gyeonggido to Kangnam, Seoul where the company office was.”
“Because the definition of a trainee was fairly unknown at the time, I was embarrassed to tell my friends about it and trained quietly.”

Singer BoA revealed the hierarchy system within SM Entertainment.
On the May 29th episode of KBS 2TV‘s ‘Win Win‘, BoA talked about how she was selected to be a judge representing SM on SBS ‘K-Pop Star‘.
One day during a company dinner, Chairman Lee Soo Man remarked that it would be nice if I were to be the SM judge on ‘K-Pop Star’,” she said. “At first, I was dumbfounded.
Within SM, I rank third after Yoo Young Jin (songwriter / producer), and Kang Ta,” she continued, admitting that the idea of representing SM was “a little intimidating.”
Aesthetically speaking, he thought it would be better for me to join the judging panel, instead of Kang Ta who is a male,” she said with a smile.
When asked why the Chairman himself did not join the panel, she answered, “I think the long filming hours would have been hard for him at his age,” letting out a laugh.
To be honest, I’m not sure why. He said he would think about it, but he became busy with something else in the meantime,” BoA explained.

They told me to lose weight a lot,” she said. “It wasn’t fat; it was baby fat. When you’re in junior high, you’re supposed to eat a lot and grow, so it’s only natural that I didn’t grow because they told me to lose weight.”
I think I’m going to be grieving about this for the rest of my life,” she added.
The emcees then agreed with her saying, “Junior high is a time for you to be develop and grow, not a time to lose weight.
